Netflix and Canadian broadcaster CBC have confirmed hit drama Anne with an E will end after its third season. News of the cancellation comes just a few weeks before season three drops worldwide on Netflix on January 3. Here’s what the streaming giants had to say about the decision.
Why has Anne with an E been cancelled?
The decision to cancel the hit drama was announced in a joint statement at the end of November 2019.
CBC, which recently aired the show’s finale in Canada, joined Netflix in explaining why the series has been cancelled.
The statement reads: “We’ve been thrilled to bring the quintessentially Canadian story of Anne with an E to viewers around the world.
“We’re thankful to producers Moira Walley-Beckett and Miranda de Pencier and to the talented cast and crew for their incredible work in sharing Anne’s story with a new generation.”

The statement concluded: “We hope fans of the show love this final season as much as we do, and that it brings a satisfying conclusion to Anne’s journey.”
While the news hit fans hard, the cast and crew were also left “sad” by the cancellation.
Showrunner Moira Walley-Beckett took to Instagram to pen her reaction to the news.
She said: “Beloved fans & friends of #AWAE, I’m sorry for the sad Netflix/CBC news today. I wish it could be different but it cannot.”
The Anne with an E creator added: “We have reached the end of the red Green Gables road after three wonderful seasons.
“My heart is heavy but I am so proud of this show – proud of my talented cast, crew, writers, and directors for working together so passionately to bring my vision of #annewithane to life.
“I know you have loved this series as much as I have and I thank you for that forever and a day.”
Lead actor Amybeth McNulty also penned a heartfelt statement in which she thanks the character of Anne for “teaching me how to be brave.”
Can Anne with an E be saved?
Inevitably the news of the cancellation was met with angry calls from fans.
So much so, Plenty took to social media to beg for the series to be saved.
One fan said on Twitter: “This can’t be the end yet there is soooooo much still to say save our Anne with an E season 4.”
A second agreed: “I’m sorry but I need to see these babies kill it at college! #SaveAnneWithAnnE.”

For fans who still want they Anne with an E fix, however, the first two seasons are available to stream on Netflix now.
