Fans were shocked by the revelation that a script for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker accidentally leaked on eBay. Daisy Ridley denied rumors that she was behind the leak. John Boyega has now answered the internet burning question: Who leaked the script?
‘Star Wars’ suffers the leak of the century
The internet has been clamoring for Star Wars spoilers. Every day for the past few months, new rumors service online about the plot of The Rise of Skywalker. In addition, many fans have scrutinized every element of the film’s advertising to try to decipher its story.
The idea of a Rise of Skywalker script being sold on eBay sounded too good to be true, especially given Disney’s penchant for secrecy. Fans came up with theories about who was behind the leak. John Boyega has gone on Good Morning America to put most of those theories to rest.
John Boyega tells all
Boyega explained “I was moving apartments, and I left the script under my bed. I was like, I will leave it under my bed and when I wake up the next morning, I will take it and then move. But then my boys came over and we started partying a little bit.”
He added “And the script, it just stayed there. And a few like weeks after, this cleaner comes in, finds this script and puts it on eBay for like 65 pounds ($84). The person didn’t know the true value.”
Boyega joked “I actually thought this is a great opportunity for the fans to read the movie before they see it. Maybe I’m onto something.” The actor said the experience of losing the script was “scary, I got calls from every official. Even Mickey Mouse called me, like ‘What did you do?!’”
Boyega noted how everything turned out alright for Disney. Someone at the company noticed the eBay listing and forced the seller to remove it. According to The Hollywood Reporter, eBay could not be reached for comment.
The craziest leak of all time
Lucasfilm was lucky this time, but it’s had more difficulty with leaks in the past. Perhaps the most famous leak in Star Wars history was the time a Chinese bootleg of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith surfaced online. The bootleg became widely known because of the striking mistranslations in its subtitles.
For unknown reasons, the title Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith was mistranslated to Backstroke of the West. CNET reported some highlights from the mangled dialogue of Backstroke of the West, including gems like “He big in nothing. Important in good elephant” and “I was just made by the Presbyterian church.”
This version of the film became an internet phenomenon. English speakers marveled at how film pirates did such a horrid job of translating the film from Mandarin into English. The translation also spawned various internet memes.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the YouTube channel GratefulDeadpool even uploaded a series of videos where actors recited the dialogue from the terrible translation. Some found this version of Revenge of the Sith much more interesting than the original. When it came to both Revenge of the Sith and The Rise of Skywalker, leaks didn’t ruin the movie – they just gave fans stories to laugh about.
