BBC Breakfast underwent a major shake-up on Tuesday morning (March 28) as host Jon Kay was absent from the studio.

Jon normally hosts Breakfast from Monday to Thursday with co-host Sally Nugent, so viewers have grown used to seeing the pair on their screens as they start their day.

But fans hoping to kickstart their Tuesday with Jon were in for a shock as he was missing from his usual spot on the red sofa.

Instead, BBC presenter Ben Thompson had stepped in to host the show with Sally so she wasn't left to hold the fort on her own.

At the time of writing, it was unclear why Jon was unable to present the show on Tuesday.

Ben is one of BBC Breakfast's batch of relief presenters that are drafted in to host the show when the main presenters like Jon are unable to do so.

When he's not presenting Breakfast, Ben co-hosts Business Live, the BBC's daily business show which is broadcast on BBC News and BBC World News.

Jon was announced as a permanent BBC Breakfast host last July, replacing previous host Dan Walker who left the BBC to present 5 News on rival broadcaster Channel 5.

Earlier this month, Jon seemed rather concerned when a rude-looking wildlife photo of three toads was revealed in the studio.

It was a snap of three toads giving each-other a piggyback captured by James Roddie, titled Hitching a Lift.

But Jon joked they shouldn't have shown the snap before the 9pm watershed as he said: "I'm not sure we should show that picture before 9pm, actually, but yeah.."

In broadcasting, the watershed is the time of day when TV programmes unsuitable for children can be shown as they might contain violent, sexual or other inappropriate content.
