Malia White from Below Deck Mediterranean shared a cryptic but possibly revealing message about the current state of her relationship with boyfriend Tom Checketts.
“You were my cup of tea but I drink champagne now,” White shared on her Instagram story over the Labor Day weekend. Fans wondered if the couple split after Checketts appeared on the show. He was thrown into the position after chef Hindrigo “Kiko” Lorran left the boat.
Checketts struggled during the first charter, but White also took serious social media heat from fans when she turned in chief stew Hannah Ferrier for having unregistered prescription valium. Ferrier was fired after White shared a photo of the medication with Captain Sandy Yawn.

White and Checketts have not confirmed or denied they are no longer together. However, in addition to the message on her Instagram story, White deleted several photos she previously posted featuring Checketts.
Checketts and White no longer follow each other on Instagram either. Checketts has retained his Instagram profile photo with White, but he doesn’t include Below Deck Med in his bio.
White has turned off all commenting on her Instagram posts after being bombarded with hateful remarks. The only photos still posted with Checketts date back to December 2019. White’s current images and videos only include the crew she’s working with in yachting while in Greece.
White worried about Checketts joining the crew
Although she may not have anticipated this level backlash, White had a feeling that bringing Checketts on the show could test their relationship. “Tom coming on board as chef was a nightmare,” White admitted on the Below Deck Med After Show. “On a selfish level I wanted this to be about me becoming bosun and I think Tom coming on board, it’s now Malia and Tom. We’re like a team.”
“That’s tough, it’s a whole other dynamic you have to worry about,” White said. “And it’s obviously no secret that I’ve had relationships on the show before. And I know how it can be really intense. How it can impact things. You know, obviously my fear is how it could affect our relationship. But because I love Below Deck, it’s not worth my relationship. Not with him! Not with this one.”
White also commented that Checketts doesn’t love being the center of attention, which made filming for him a challenge. “To be honest, I think in that moment, it hit Tom, like, ‘I’m getting filmed,’” she recalled during the initial charter. “He’s also not one to be in the limelight in the first place. So I think to see food come back and for him to think, ‘Oh shoot, this could go very negatively.’ I think was probably quite shocking.”
“He’s been in yachting for a long time, he has a very established career in yachting,” White added. “He didn’t need to come do this. And honestly, I was just setting him up for failure. And that was terrifying for me.”
