Conflicting feelings in ‘Black Lightning’ season 3 episode 9

Jennifer starts the episode feeling conflicted. She is recording a message for her sister Anissa, talking about her feelings about the A.S.A. occupation. On the one hand, her heart is telling her that her father, Jefferson Pierce, and her sister are right to resist the A.S.A. However, her head is telling her something different.

Her head is telling her that Agent Odell and the other members of the A.S.A. are just doing what is necessary to fight the Markovians. She doesn’t know what to do or who to follow. She can see the merits of both sides. Instead of sending a message to her sister, Jennifer decides to go to visit Anissa.

When she goes downstairs, Agent Odell sends her a message on her TV screen. He tells her that she needs to choose a side and he, of course, hopes that she will choose his. He tells her that by taking out the Markovian data farm with her powers, she has saved more lives than her father has by being Black Lightning. Odell also brings up Khalil as an example of Black Lightning failing to save someone but doesn’t mention what he himself has done to Khalil.

The rebellion isn’t doing too well in ‘Black Lightning’ season 3 episode 9

Odell gives her a job to do but first Jennifer has to see her sister. She puts on her Lightning suit and goes over to Anissa’s place. Anissa, however, isn’t there. She’s with her father as Black Lightning and the other members of the rebellion against the A.S.A.

The A.S.A. somehow intercepted and altered the information that the resistance sent out in last week’s episode. The truth, therefore, is not known outside of Freeland like they had hoped it would be. Anissa tells her father that Khalil is alive and has been turned into Painkiller by the A.S.A. The organization seems to be using him as a weapon and he seems, in Anissa’s view, to be rather robotic and unable to be reasoned with.

Crisis of many Jennifer Pierces

When Anissa finally gets home in Black Lightning season 3 episode 9, it is to find her sister Jennifer passed out and dealing with something unexplainable. Anissa, of course, calls her “Uncle” Peter Gambi for help dealing with this problem. Meanwhile, the audience gets insight into what Jennifer is going through. She meets two different versions of herself from other Earths.

One version, known as Gen, has been thrown in the Pit by the A.S.A. for putting something in the water in Freeland that would get rid of the powers of every metahuman in the town. This alternate-universe version of Jennifer, Gen, is briefly let out for Christmas but Agent Odell has something up his sleeve. She watches helplessly as Odell shoots her father for the crime of running an underground railroad with Reverend Holt.

The other version of Jennifer, known as Jinn, willingly worked with Odell and ended the war with Markovia. However, to do so she went farther than the main version of Jennifer did, and killed a lot of people. When her family tries to stage an intervention, this version of Jennifer, Jinn,  responds by killing Anissa and Lynn. Jinn and this world’s version of Jefferson then fight, and Jinn defeats and kills her father.

The main version of Jennifer then fights Jinn while Gen looks on and tries to break up the fight. The fight eventually stops and Jennifer talks to her other versions. She tells Jinn that there is no one left who loves her and Gen that “there is no such thing as normal” and that her powers are a “gift from God” that she is meant to have. Gen and Jinn disappear but that doesn’t help Jennifer at all, because she is wiped out with the rest of her family — except her father, Jefferson/Black Lightning, who teleported out of danger seconds before.
