Cringiest Jonathan Ross Show moments – lewd remark to excruciating interview

The Jonathan Ross show first aired on the BBC 12 years ago today.

Before it kicked off in September 2011, the presenter was also the host of Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, broadcast on the BBC from 2001 to 2010.

Across the two shows, viewers have watched the broadcaster interview top celebrities from around the world, from musicians to Hollywood actors over the last decade.

But while they remain amongst the nation's most popular chat shows, there has been plenty of toe-curling moments that have forced fans to turn away from their screens.

From an interview deemed "the most awkward ever" to Strictly star Seann Walsh's infamous apology, here are some of the most cringiest moments from Jonathan Ross' chat shows.

'Excruciating' interview

Back in 2016, Jonathan Ross welcomed tennis player Johanna Konta onto the show and she certainly didn't make it easy for him.

Things got off to a rocky start during the 62-year-old's interview with the tennis champ after he asked about people she would like to play against and who she is wary of.

As the 32-year-old began to answer, she snapped: "This is such a boring question".

To which Jonathan hit back: “I’ll be the judge of that.”

Afterwards, when the broadcaster was sharing his views on her semi-final match with with Angelique Kerber at the Australian Open, Johanna interrupted: "Is this your professional opinion by the way?"

Later in the show, Jonathan attempted to lighten the mood by getting Johanna to hit grapes into Twilight star Taylor Lautner's mouth using her tennis racket.

But when the presenter suggested she change her grip, she snapped: “Really? Leave me alone."

Audience members later described Johanna's appearance as "frosty", claiming the "excruciating" interview had been uncomfortable to watch.

Lewd comments

Jonathan Ross came under fire in April 2008 after making vulgar suggestions to Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow.

The broadcaster infamously said he would "f***" her before claiming she was "clearly gagging for it".

After chatting to the Iron Man star about her two children, Apple and Moses, who were four and two at the time, Jonathan asked: "Have you got plans to maybe have sex again soon?"

To which the Hollywood star responded: "With you?"

Not holding back, Jonathan replied: "Christ yes, if you want to have sex I'll phone my wife and if she gave me permission I would f*** you. Because you know what, you're so nice and clearly, you're gagging for it."

While Gwyneth came out later and said she found the comments "hilarious", the same couldn't be said for her father-in-law at the time who found them "very offensive".

The BBC Trust also criticised The Masked Singer judge for the remarks, claiming they were "gratuitous and unnecessarily offensive".

Marital bicker

In 2007, Peter Andre and Katie Price had been plagued with split rumours and while there appearance on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross was meant to silence these, it did the exact opposite.

The former glamour model, 45, spent majority of the exchange swiping at her husband, including admitting: "I don't need anything of yours," without even looking at him.

Things took an even more awkward turn when Peter, 50, offered his wife sexual favour in return for Jonathan going on their new show.

Infamous apology

Comedian Seann Walsh made headlines in 2018 when he was spotted kissing his Strictly Come Dancing partner Katya Jones, who was married to fellow pro Neil Jones at the time.

The following year, the 37-year-old appeared on The Jonathan Ross show where he issued an apology for his actions, albeit a slightly awkward one.

Seann, who was in a relationship at the time of the kiss, said: "“Obviously I was stupid and I was selfish and I was hurtful to someone that I cared about and someone that I respected, and I still care about and still respect."

After admitting he would "always be sorry" for what he did, Seann added: "I think when it all blew up, I don’t think I reacted in the correct manner.

"I didn’t know what to do, it was huge. It has been some time since then, I have had a lot of time to look at my actions, look at my behaviour and take responsibility as well.”

Seann was in the presence of Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson and Samuel L Jackson and The Voice coaches will.i.am and Jennifer Hudson, making it tough to watch.

He later appeared on I'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! where he recalled the apology, calling it the "worst moment" of his life.

Seann told Coronation Street star Sue Cleaver: "I said sorry. I sat on Jonathan Ross's TV show and apologised. I sat next to will.i.am and Samuel L. Jackson and apologised.

''That will forever be the weirdest moment of my life and I have to say probably the worst moment of my life.''

Margaret Thatcher question

In 2006, Jonathan Ross asked former Prime Minister David Cameron whether he'd fantasised about Margaret Thatcher.

During an episode of Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, the presenter had asked: "Did you or did you not have a w**k thinking of Thatcher?"

Of course, the Conservative MP chose not to answer the question.

After the exchange, former Tory minister Norman Tebbit said claimed it was "obscene" while Ofcom received 251 complaints.

Following the complaints, Jonathan told BBC Radio Five Live: "I stand by it. It was a perfectly valid question.

"He [Lord Tebbit] said 21 people complained out of the four million who watched, and viewers had been warned the show contained 'language'.

"We don't set out to upset people. I wouldn't want to do that, even though upsetting Norman Tebbit has given me some small sense of satisfaction because he's spent 12 years upsetting me."
