Dame Barbara Windsor’s husband Scott Mitchell might have to move the EastEnders star into a care home as she continues Alzheimer’s battle.
The 57-year-old is said to have opened up about his wife’s condition to Ross Kemp in his new documentary Ross Kemp: Living With Dementia.
And while discussing the disease, The Sun reports that the actor emotionally confessed he could be moving his wife into care.
According to the publication, the heartbroken hubby states: ‘It’s the thing I’ve always feared.
‘He’s basically telling me I need to prepare myself that at some point it may not be sustainable to give her the kind of care she needs at the house.’
‘I’ve had some fairly dark moments since he said that because there’s a part of me that knows that most likely is the truth and that’s what needs to happen.’ Scott added. ‘There’s another part of me which can’t imagine letting her go.
‘I can’t imagine leaving that lady when she talks to me the way she does and putting her somewhere and her thinking, “Why has he done this to me?”‘
The Peggy Mitchell actress was first diagnosed with the disease six years ago.
And it’s starting to take its toll, as the 55-year-old who played Grant Mitchell in the soap revealed his onscreen mum was recently unable to recognise him.
‘Who are you? What are you doing here?’ he recalled in his new series.
‘I’ve been in Barbara Windsor’s house for just a few minutes. I’m sitting down with a cup of tea and a biscuit with my friend of three decades. I’m taken aback, but I can’t show it.’
The actor added: ‘When I arrived, she greeted me with a hug, as one of her closest friends.
‘Barbara was my TV mum on EastEnders and is hilariously funny and vivacious, with a rapier wit — we’ve always had a giggle, on and off set. But now she clearly has no idea who I am.’
