Dermot O’Leary has hinted that we could be seeing a hiatus for popular talent TV show The X Factor next year.
The show in its usual format was last seen on our screens in 2018, with two celebrity versions being shown in 2019 instead.
However, it seems that music mogul Simon Cowell has decided against bringing the show back next year, despite the promise of a COVID-19 vaccine that could see like starting to go back to normal as early as the spring.
Dermot, who hosts the hit show, appeared on this weekend’s Sunday Brunch and said fans are in for a “long wait.”
Asked if he knew when the show was coming back, Dermot said: “If I knew, I’d tell you, because I’d be happy. I’ve no idea!”
“It definitely won’t be next year, so it will probably be back in 2022.”
Asked if he had spoken to show boss Simon about it, Dermot said: "We've been in touch” but admitted that the show takes a lot of planning and production.
"It's got the turning circle of a car ferry. There's a lot of planning that goes into it.”
Dermot has hosted The X Factor since 20017 and last year’s celebrity versions got off to a poo starts with just 2.95m tuning in for the launch show. That was the show’s lowest ever ratings.
Dermot will have his hands full, though, after being confirmed as Alison Hammond’s co-host on This Morning.
The duo will replace Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford every Friday from January 8 2021.
Managing Director, ITV Daytime, Emma Gormley said: “We are delighted that Alison and Dermot will be joining the main presenting family on This Morning.
“Alison has provided some of the most memorable moments on the show in recent times and teamed up with the brilliant Dermot we think they are a great pairing in addition to our fabulous presenting line up of Phillip and Holly and Eamonn & Ruth.”
Speaking about his new appointment, Dermot said: “I'm deeply thrilled and honoured to be joining the This Morning team next year.
“We have huge shoes to fill and we are well aware what a privilege it is to be stepping into them. Above all, we want to have fun and for you to be able to kick your weekend off with a smile, especially given the year we've all had.
“So I'm delighted to be co-hosting with the living embodiment of sunshine on a rainy day. I can't wait to get started.”
