Good Morning Britain spoke to Alan Titchmarsh MBE on a live video link from Virginia Water this morning ahead of his new TV show 50 Shades of Green airing on ITV tonight which celebrates his staggering 50-year-career. The presenters were keen to find out whether he was going to be recognised further by the Queen for his duties to the horticultural industry.
Alan kicked started his career as an apprentice gardener before studying horticulture and finally receiving a Diploma from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
After a few years experience under his belt, in 1974 he went onto pursue a career in gardening journalism and made his television debut with Gardeners’ World.
Alongside this, he was invited to present coverage of the Chelsea Flower Show for the BBC for 20 years until 2013.
More recently, he has fronted a series of shows for ITV with another series of Love Your Garden returning to the channel in upcoming months.

As well as his television appearances, Alan has had several successful stints on radio, and has also published several fiction and non-fiction books.
Because of his incredible work and services, not only was he awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s highest accolade – the Victoria Medal of Honour, he was appointed MBE back in 2000 New Year Honours list.
But Piers and Susanna were starting a campaign to get him knighted.
“It can’t be long until you get another tap on the shoulder can it?” Piers asked.
“Rise Sir Alan to services of Humanity,” he joked.
At this precise moment, the sound connection between Alan and the ITV studio cut out.
“Don’t know about you hearing me, but I can’t hear you,” Alan remarked.
“Oh, so modest,” Susanna replied unaware of the technical issue.

“If you can hear us Alan, we were just suggesting it’s long overdue that you’re not Sir Alan Titchmarsh,” Piers continued.
“I’m here, are you still there?” Alan said.
“We’re going to knight you in the absence of your ear piece,” Susanna joked.
“I didn’t hear anything, I’m back now!” Alan commented.
