It’s not unusual for the writers at Grey’s Anatomy to put viewer’s favorite couples through painful events, and Arizona and Callie were no exception. The couple shared heartbreak and love during their years together. But one destructive episode the couple suffered still doesn’t sit right with some people even years later.
Arizona and Callie’s love story
When Arizona and Callie fell in love during Season 5, viewers were pulling for the passionate doctors. But when a couple walks the halls of Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital, you can be sure that trials lie ahead.
As Entertainment Weekly explains, over the years, the women’s love weathered many traumatic events. A gunman entered the hospital, for example, and Callie experienced a near-fatal car accident that almost killed her unborn baby. Their drama-filled wedding was a beautiful celebration, but a plane crash followed it up the next season.
Arizona ended up having her leg amputated because of the injuries from the crash. She blamed Callie for this, despite the fact that the surgery was necessary to save her life. That struggle nearly drove them apart. But their relationship seemed to be healing and reconnecting when something else tested them yet again.
Arizona’s infidelity
In Season 9, Arizona found herself attracted to a surgeon brought in to consult on a difficult case. The surgeon, Lauren, flirts with Arizona. After a few moments filled with sexual tension, they end up sleeping together at the hospital. According to HuffPost, Callie realizes what’s happened when she sees Arizona’s engagement ring pinned to Lauren’s shirt.
Fans were upset that this happened when the couple had gone through so much and seemed to be rebuilding their lives. And even though both women have since left the popular medical drama, some fans still can’t accept Arizona’s actions.
Fans think it was out of character
In a recent Reddit discussion about Arizona and Callie, a fan got the ball rolling by saying, “i feel like i’m the only person who can’t forgive arizona for cheating on callie, is it just me?” Other viewers jumped in to agree. One said, “Callie was there for Arizona the whole time n didn’t do anything wrong.”
“Honestly, Callie deserved so much better,” another said. “I know Arizona went through something traumatic but she completely dismissed how Callie had lost in that plane crash.”
Another viewer pointed out that the impulsive infidelity was unlike Arizona, especially since her relationship with Callie seemed to be going so well. “My issue is that is felt like there was no reason for the cheating. Arizona and Callie weren’t fighting nothing was wrong there was no reason to cheat so randomly like that. It was disappointing and kind of out of character.”
A few fans suggested that this sort of behavior was expected on Grey’s Anatomy. One even claimed, “At this point, if you don’t cheat on this show, you must be doing something wrong lmao. It’s a Grey-Sloan staple!” But for most of the people who responded, Arizona’s decision to cheat was could never be excused, saying, “I never forgave her, either.”
Callie and Arizona may have moved on from Grey’s Anatomy, but they left a lasting impression on viewers. And for some, Arizona still has at least one big sin to atone for.
