Jerry Seinfeld in the MCU? Fans' Latest Villain Cast Is a Happy Accident

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies are some of the highest-grossing films in movie history, so getting cast in them is a dream for virtually all actors. Look what landing the title role in the first Iron Man movie did for reviving Robert Downey Jr.’s career.

Fans of the series of comic book movies like doing fantasy casting for future installments in the series, trying to make their dream casts for the upcoming flicks. One recent attempt at fantasy casting on Reddit took a rather humorous turn due to a simple misreading of a post. Someone failed to notice a “t” in a name, leading to the idea of comedian Jerry Seinfeld potentially playing a villain in the MCU.

The roster of MCU villains

Landing the role of a villain in a movie in the MCU is a high honor for any thespian, considering some of the high-profile performers who have done it previously. Golden Globe winner Tom Hiddleston played Loki in several Thor and Avengers movies.

Oscar-nominated actor Josh Brolin portrayed one of the biggest villains of them all, Thanos, and Oscar winner Jeff Bridges was the bad guy Downer went after when he was the hero’s nemesis Obadiah Stane in the original Iron Man. Other top actors who have been villains in the movies include Michael B. Jordan, James Spader, and two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett.

Hailee Steinfeld in the MCU?

In the Reddit post about future castings in the MCU, user SKAAR616 noted that “many sources” reported during the summer that “Steinfeld as Bishop was a done deal.”

That was a reference to news reports via CBR that Oscar-winning actress Hailee Steinfeld would be joining the cast of the upcoming Disney+ series Hawkeye, playing the role of Kate Bishop who would be training to become the next Hawkeye, becoming the next generation of the superhero. Those reports seemingly confirmed rumors that had been around for a while.

Casting Steinfeld for a major role in the MCU seems to make sense. While she has not yet appeared in any MCU movies, she has been in a Marvel project. Steinfeld voiced the role of Spider-Gwen in the 2018 computer-animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which features the titular hero who is part of the MCU, but the film itself takes place in an alternate universe.

Having that connection to a popular Marvel property, though, seems like it could help launch Steinfeld into the MCU proper sooner rather than later.

Jerry Seinfeld in the MCU?

When Reddit user Crash7689 read SKAAR616, they replied by admitting that they misread the post, thinking Steinfeld said Seinfeld, “Thank God I double checked,” wrote Crash7689.

That admission led to a thread-within-a-thread where other MCU fans contemplated the idea of the man who starred in the “show about nothing” in the 1990s joining the Marvel Universe, potentially as a villain — which would be an entirely different type of casting than Seinfeld has ever had before.

While Steinfeld joining the MCU makes sense, Seinfeld joining it seems a bit more far-fetched.

SKAAR616 seemed to like the idea, responding with “Lmao. Even better!” Reddit users seemed to be intrigued by the possibility, though. A post by starwarsfan456123789 simply read “Jerry Seinfeld as a Marvel villain- yes please!”

The poster who started the thread, xforce4life, pointed out that Jeff Goldblum has become one of the “most fun” Marvel villains — he portrayed Grandmaster in Thor: Ragnarok — and they would like to see what Seinfeld could do in a similar position.

Another user, LoveWaffle1, came up with some possible lines for Seinfeld based on the types of jokes he is known for making, including “What’s the deal with the Avengers? Who are they actually avenging? Or do they need to avenge a different person every time?”
