Today marks one week since we heard these words… . “So this is your baby’s heart (pointing to the ultrasound screen). I don’t hear a heartbeat or see any movement.” . We had gone in for our 20-week ultrasound and gender reveal. It was a baby girl. Although we don’t understand why, God has given us unexplainable peace and comfort during this very difficult time. Yes, it still hurts and we have cried countless tears, but we know that we can trust the Lord. In the words of King David after the loss of his baby, “I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me” (2 Sam 12:23). We don’t grieve as those who have no hope because we trust that we will see this little one again. We named her Annabell Elise. Annabell means “God has favored me”, and Elise means “God satisfies”. What a precious thing to know that when our daughter opened her eyes, the first thing she saw was the face of Jesus. Please pray for continued healing, not only physically but for our hearts as well. . “All the way my Savior leads me; What have I to ask beside? Can I doubt His tender mercy, Who through life has been my Guide? Heav’nly peace, divinest comfort, Here by faith in Him to dwell! For I know, whate’er befall me, Jesus doeth all things well, For I know, whate’er befall me, Jesus doeth all things well.” -Fanny Crosby

Joy-Anna has had a difficult few months. In early July, she announced she had experienced a miscarriage at 20 weeks. The tragic loss of her second child had many of the show’s fans worried about the 22-year-old, especially since several of her sisters-in-law were also expecting.

But Joy-Anna seems to be embracing a positive outlook despite her struggles. She’s clarified that she feels “true joy” as her friends and family welcome their own children into the world. And her Instagram is full of happy photos of her adventures with husband Austin Forsyth and their son Gideon.

Now, she’s trying out a fresh new hairstyle, complete with bangs.

Fans and family are loving her makeover

When Joy-Anna showed off her new look on Instagram, the response was overwhelmingly positive.

“The bangs look great,” commented her sister-in-law Anna Duggar.

“Cute joy joy!” wrote her big sister Jill Duggar.

Many fans also chimed in to say that they loved her new style. “The bangs look AMAZING!” wrote one fane. “Omgosh your hair is 🔥🔥🔥” added another. One even thought she looked a bit like singer/actress Mandy Moore.

Joy’s older sister Jinger Duggar was also a fan. “Love the bangs, Joy joy!” she commented. Jinger is no stranger to big hairstyle changes herself. Earlier this year, she caused a stir went from brunette to blonde in advance of her big move to Los Angeles.

While Joy-Anna is all smiles in the photo she posted with Austin, she did admit that the new style is a big change. Replying to her sister’s comment, she wrote: “@jingervuolo thanks! Still getting used to them!🙃.”

The Duggar girls are trying out new hairstyles

For years, all the girls in the Duggar family had essentially the same hairstyle: long and curly. They didn’t just choose the look for aesthetic reasons. Keeping their long hair was actually part of their religious beliefs, as Jinger, Jessa, Jill, and Jana wrote in their 2014 book Growing Up Duggar.

“Our hairstyle is our choice and we choose longer hair based on our understanding of 1 Corinthians 11:14-15,” they explained.

The Duggar family also followed the teachings of Bill Gothard, a controversial fundamentalist minister who encourages homeschooling, submission to patriarchal authority, and modesty in dress. Not only were women urged to wear long skirts and avoid showing too much skin, but they were also taught to wear their hair long and curly, reportedly because Gothard favored that style. (Gothard resigned from his ministry in 2014 following allegations that he’d sexually abused young women and girls.)

As the Duggar daughters have grown up, they’ve started to abandon the curly-haired look. Jinger has lightened her hair and now wears it straight. Jill still keeps her hair long, but she also skips the curls. Recently, she even got her hair professionally cut and styled for the first time. Jana still has long hair, but she now opts for softer waves versus the perm she had in her teens. Clearly, they’ve decided it’s time for a more up-to-date look.
