Kate Garraway sends fans personal message via Susanna Reid after Finding Derek

Kate Garraway has sent a personal message of thanks to fans after she was inundated with love and support following the broadcast of her Finding Derek documentary.

The ITV regular isn't back in the Good Morning Britain studio until Thursday but wanted to make sure her the thousands of tweets haven't gone unnoticed.

Halting the show on Wednesday, Susanna Reid explained how Kate had reached out to her to pass on a message of gratitude.

Susanna said: "She will be back in tomorrow but she is reading every single message and she is really grateful for the support."

Finding Derek documented the heartbreaking 12 months Kate has been through after her husband Derek Draper was hospitalised with Covid in March 2020.

While he is now Covid free, the virus has destroyed his organs meaning he is still severely ill in hospital.

As well as returning to work, Kate has been continuing to raise their two children and speak with doctors to make sure Derek is getting the best medical help he can.

Sadly, Covid caused kidney failure as well as damage to his heart.

Derek is also thought to have suffered substantial brain damage.

Kate recently admitted she fears what her husband's life will be like when he is eventually able to leave hospital.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, she said: "The very worst moment was when they said he could be locked in forever. And I just thought this is a horror story.

"I don't know if he'll ever have any kind of life again. We just don't know. The change in his body is shocking."

Speaking on GMB earlier this month, Kate admitted at one point it looked like Derek could be stuck in hospital for ever.

Kate said: "The very worst moment was when they said he could be locked in forever.

Kate still doesn't know if Derek will be able to come home but she had started work to revamp their house to make it suitable for him to live in.

It is thought if he does come home he may be wheelchair bound.
