Kirsty Gallacher reveals divorce from Paul Sampson gave her PTSD and left her 'grief-stricken'

SPORTS presenter Kirsty Gallacher has revealed her divorce caused post traumatic stress disorder and describes herself as “a bird freed” afterwards.

The telly star, 44, split from retired rugby ace Paul Sampson, 42, in 2015 after 15 years together.

She says she was “grief-stricken” for the two sons they have shared custody of, now aged 13 and ten.

Kirsty hit “rock bottom” when she was caught driving three times over the alcohol limit in 2017.

And the former Sky host said: “The divorce was a very difficult period. I found it devastating.

“I was grieving and mourning. I think I had post traumatic stress disorder. I was skinny, not eating and wanting to black it all out. It was painful.”

She told the Outspoken Beauty podcast: “I felt a burden and a sadness for my children, even though I didn’t do anything wrong and Sammo didn’t do anything wrong. No one was to blame.”

In March, Kirsty caught coronavirus. She recovered but said: “I was very unwell. It’s a very strange virus. Every day I had something different and new. The cough came last for me.

“Having a walk was almost impossible. I was so out of breath and I struggled doing anything. The sickness was horrific.”

Kirsty also told Made By Mammas podcast she regrets doing Strictly so soon after the split.

She said: “It was a horrible time and I was grief-stricken for the children.

“I was doing Strictly Come Dancing which I loved but I definitely shouldn’t have done it. It wasn’t the right time.”

But she admits that she enjoyed dating again.

She is currently single but said: “I was like a bird freed. You can do whatever you want.

“Once you get over the initial sadness and you suddenly realise you’re not in a relationship and you feel freedom.

“You’re in these relationships for a long time and you haven’t been single since your twenties.”

Kirsty now feels she is in a good place with several broadcasting projects on the go. She added: “I’m happier than ever.”
