The widespread popularity of jukebox musicals like Mamma Mia! proves audiences are interested in stories told through the prism of pop music. However, rarely has the relationship between narrative and music been explored on the big screen like in Last Christmas.
Inspired by the music of the late George Michael, the film may be poised to be a breakout hit this holiday season. Let’s take a closer look at what fans can expect from Last Christmas and, of course, its soundtrack.
What is the ‘Last Christmas’ movie about?
Set in London during Christmas, the film stars Emilia Clarke as Kate, an unlucky woman whose life changes when she meets Tom (Henry Golding). Described as a romantic drama, the film marks something of a departure for director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids). Emma Thompson co-stars and co-wrote the screenplay.
While the film may position Clarke as a romantic leading lady, what concerns fans most is its mysterious plot. Although the premise of Last Christmas sounds familiar, Feig’s films often flip genre conventions on their head. Take his last film, A Simple Favor, for instance.

Will the film be a fitting tribute to the late pop star’s catalog?
For Michael fans, it’s difficult to see how Last Christmas pays tribute to the late singer/songwriter. After all, right now it feels like just another romantic drama with a trick or two up its sleeve. Then again, Michael himself did provide his blessing to the project before his death.
While Last Christmas might not be a biopic in the traditional sense, it might be able to capture Michael in another way. Much of his music tapped into self-esteem, self-expression, and acceptance. So maybe Last Christmas has more to say than its trailers indicate.
