Meghan McCain sounds off on Greta Thunberg: ‘I just didn’t think she earned it’

Time Magazine recently crowned climate change activist Greta Thunberg as 2019’s Person of the Year — and many people were less than thrilled with the decision.

Chief among those was President Donald Trump who tweeted his hostility towards the 16-year-old girl on Thursday in response to a tweet congratulating Thunberg on her win:

“So ridiculous,” Trump wrote, “Greta must work on her Anger Management problem, then go to a good old fashioned movie with a friend! Chill Greta, Chill!”

The tweet made for a conversation starter on Thursday’s episode of ‘The View’ when host Joy Behar referenced the tweet in a segment, calling Trump ‘jealous’.

Co-host Meghan McCain however had a different opinion:

“I don’t put a ton of clout into the ‘Time’ person of the year — keep in mind Hitler and the Ayatollah were also the Person of the Year … the point is to be influential. I actually wanted it to be the [Trump] whistleblower this year… I think its a more salient and timely choice. It’s hard for me to talk about Greta Thunberg because she’s 16 and I still don’t believe in attacking underage people. I disagree with her, I think everyone knows how I feel about climate change’s religion on the left but i’m not going to attack a 16-year-old the same way that I don’t agree with attacking Barron Trump.”

McCain was referencing the Stanford professor who mentioned Barron during her testimony in the impeachment hearings, sparking outrage from first lady Melania Trump.

Co-host Sunny Hostin clarified that ‘Time’ named public servants during the impeachment trials as ‘Guardians of the Year’, including the likes of former Ukraine ambassador Marie Yovanovitch and the Trump whistleblower.

However, McCain pressed on:

“I just didn’t think she earned it in the same way the whistleblower did when it comes to influence this year … I don’t agree with her as a choice and I also think when you’re 16 – is this peak for her? What comes next? This is a high, high bar for her. I don’t know how you can possibly live up when you are 17 when you’re already Person of the Year.”
