For the best part of 16 years, Tony DiNozzo (played by Michael Weatherly) cemented himself as one of the most popular characters in CBS drama NCIS. Thanks to his quick wit, crime-fighting prowess and romance with Ziva David (Cote de Pablo), Tony’s status as a fan-favourite hasn’t been diminished despite bowing out back in 2016. And now, ahead of the show’s 19th season later this year, Weatherly has sparked speculation about a possible return thanks to a snap from the NCIS set shared on Twitter.
The last fans heard of Tony’s whereabouts in NCIS was courtesy of his father Tony Senior (David Wagner) way back in season 17.
Tony Sr had headed to Paris, France, to reunite with his son as this is where he was living with Ziva and their daughter Tali.
Providing an update on Tony’s status, Tony Sr explained in letters sent to Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) he was in Paris “with the fam”.
Jimmy told the team: “Apparently, by reuniting Ziva with Tony and Tali, NCIS has made him the ‘happiest pop-pop’ ever.”
This was the last fans heard of their favourite power couple with season 18 failing to provide any further clarification.
But could season 19 finally see the return of either of the lovingly branded ‘Tiva’ pairing?
CBS is yet to share any official confirmation of the comeback happening, but it hasn’t stopped Weatherly from sending the rumour mill into overdrive.
Taking to Twitter over the weekend, Weatherly shared a – presumably – throwback snap of him on the set of the CBS drama.
He captioned the snap to his 458.8k followers: “#ncis Camera is King.”
In the photo, Weatherly can be seen getting up close and personal with one of the show’s cameras on set, enjoying a bit of playful time between scenes.
While many of his fans were pleased to see Weatherly back in his NCIS attire in the old snap, it didn’t take long for fans to speculate he was hinting towards a possible comeback.
“R u really coming back for a visit on ncis would love it (sic),” one fan replied, with a second adding: “Time for Tony and Ziva to get married with Gibbs giving her away.”

“Wish u’d come back to ncis, not been same without Tony,” a third suggested. (sic)
While a fourth commented: “Would love to see you do a cameo with Cote and that ADORABLE little girl!”
“Wow….Is Dinozzo coming back to NCIS. Cant wait to see this,” a fifth theorised as a sixth suggested: “He need to show up with Ziva.”
And a final fan tweeted: “Grab your gear and dust off Very Special Agent Anthony Dinozzo’s badge. It’s time for Tony to come back for a visit.”
Could Weatherly be hinting at a return to the fold in season 19?
As mentioned earlier, nothing has been announced, although there are some disappointing clues to suggest Tony will be absent once more.
Weatherly leads the way in fellow CBS drama Bull, both as leading actor and producer.
And with Bull being recently renewed for its sixth run, penned to premiere on October 7, Weatherly’s work diary may be a bit too congested for a return to NCIS.
NCIS season 19 premieres on CBS on Monday, September 20.
