Netflix's latest true crime documentary The Devil on Trial has left fans so terrified that they're unable to trust anybody.
The Devil on Trial is based on true events, following the story of a 1980's murder trial that saw "demonic possession" used as a legal defence in a U.S. trial for the first time ever. It explores the confessions of the-then 19-year-old Arne Cheyenne Johnson, who claims he was possessed by the devil.
In the doc, Arne explains he believes himself to have been a victim of possession by Lucifer, following the demonic possession of his girlfriend's younger brother, David Glatzel. David's parents hired demonologists to exorcise their son, during which Arne alleges he asked the devil to possess his own body instead.

Arne then went on to murder his friend and landlord Alan Bono at a party, alleging that despite eyewitness corroboration, he has no memory of the event. The now-61-year-old maintains that it was the devil that made him do it, leading to the murder case being often referred to as “The Devil Made Me Do It” case.
Despite his passionate conviction that he did not murder Alan in cold blood (or conscious mind), Arne's defence did not hold up in court and was charged with manslaughter. The American man served only five years of prison time, despite his 10 to 20-year sentence.
Both Arne and his now-deceased wife, Debbie, maintain the possessions were very real, but Debbie and David's father deny the possessions. The story was already the basis of 2021 horror film, 'The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It', but now Arne is using the documentary to tell his story his way, for the very first time.
Released earlier this week, the true crime doc has already left the internet freaking out. Viewers took to X, formerly Twitter to share their shock at the chilling watch.
One user wrote, "the devil on trial thing on netflix is freaking me out", whilst another agreed, "Made the poor choice to watch The Devil on Trial at midnight and now I’m scared.” Fans also took to Netflix's Instagram to weigh in with their thoughts.

A viewer wrote: "Finished it… I'm more curious as to why there was zero mentions about the Devils rocking chair, since that's a key artifact to the case." Not everyone agreed with the story, though, with one account writing, "the devil on trial will strengthen your non-belief10 more times lol [sic]".
One questioned how the devil left Arne's body after the murder, writing: “Did it leave his body during incarceration? Something isn’t adding up.” Another agreed: “So Arne was ‘possessed’ when he killed, but then after that he just wasn’t possessed anymore?”
