Nitin Ganantra reckons EastEnders is in need of ‘gutsy’ and ‘courageous’ new teams in order to compete with the ‘ever-streaming world’.
The actor, who portrayed Masood Ahmed, discussed the BBC One soap’s future, after being made OBE for services to acting by the Duke of Cambridge on Tuesday (May 17).
Making reference to how EastEnders has seen a decline in viewership in recent years, he suggested that the show’s approach to storytelling will ‘inevitably’ have to change if it’s to compete with streaming giants.
‘I think a show like EastEnders needs very gutsy, courageous new teams really,’ said Nitin.
‘I wouldn’t say just a producer or a writing team, I think the whole approach to storytelling will inevitably have to change.
‘So I do hope they do survive another 40 years, I think they will.
‘It is so much of the culture of this country, that I wish it to survive.’
Nitin, who played Masood across various stints in the show, made his Albert Square debut back in 2007, and departed in 2019.
The actor, who is currently starring in Apple TV’s The Essex Serpent, revealed that he would ‘never say no’ to reprising his role, adding that there is something ‘extraordinary’ about working on the Square.
‘Obviously I love the character of Masood, he was a groundbreaking character,’ he told PA News Agency.
‘I was the longest-running Asian character in its history.
‘So that’s quite a huge achievement in my eyes for an actor from a diverse background.
EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One.
