NORMAL People fans have raged after Daisy-Edgar Jones missed out on an Emmys nomination – but she still pays tribute to co-star Paul Mescal.
The awards nominations were released on Tuesday, and while it's no surprise the smash hit BBC Three drama caught the attention of the awards bosses, fans were shocked to see Paul receive a nod while his co-star Daisy was overlooked.
Paul, 24, has been nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie category for his role as Connell.
Daisy was quick to congratulate her co-star on his nomination, despite any disappointment she might have over her own lack of acknowledgment from the Emmys board.
Taking to her Instagram page yesterday, Daisy, 22, shared a picture from the set of Paul and Lenny Abrahamson, who is nominated for Outstanding Directing For A Limited Series, Movie Or Dramatic Special.
She wrote: "I could not be more proud of these two utterly incredible people, working with you both has been one of the greatest joys of my life.
"Also huge congrats to @louisekielycasting, you’re incredible, and also Sally and Alice and @element_pictures, we smashed it."
Paul replied: "You are the best person. Properly weeping x."
However, fans were left furious by Daisy's Emmys 'snub', believing she deserved a nomination for her role as Marianne as much as Paul did for playing her on-off lover.
Taking to social media, many considered the decision to be sexist, with one person writing: "Outrageous snub for Daisy Edgar Jones in #EmmyNoms obscenely racist and sexist industry #Emmys2020."
Another added: "Lots of Emmy noms im excited about, some snubs I’m disappointed by. But my biggest takeaway that makes no sense to me is giving Paul Mescal a nomination and leaving out Daisy Edgar Jones.
"Normal people is so great because they’re both great in it."
Writing after the nominations were announced, Lenny said on social media: "Delighted for @mescal_paul @louisekiely Sally and Alice and huge love too to the brilliant @DaisyEdgarJones who is woven into the dna of this show in a way impossible to separate. The nominations are hers too."
Normal People is available on BBC iPlayer now.
