Outlander season 5: Duncan Lacroix drops bombshell on Murtagh Fitzgibbons return

Outlander viewers witnessed one of the most emotional episodes in the Starz series history this weekend. After Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Hueghan) hunted his godfather, Murtagh Fitzgibbons (Duncan Lacroix), throughout most of the season, he finally found himself off the hook from the British empire, allowing him to stop the chase. However, in a shocking turn of events, Murtagh became embroiled in a brutal battle, leaving him with fatal wounds.

An emotional Jamie was forced to sit with his beloved godfather as he spoke his last words a short while after.

Fans of the franchise were distraught by the loss of the favourite characters – but the death was not exactly a surprise.

Diana Gabaldon’s novels – of which the Outlander franchise is based on – saw the death of Murtagh back in the second book of the series.

Therefore, fans were a little surprised when Murtagh survived the second season and continued to be a huge part of the ongoing narrative.

Now, following Murtagh’s death, actor Duncan has spoken out about how he found out about the loss of his character.

And that’s not all, as he also spoke out about whether Murtagh could ever make a dramatic return in the seasons to come.

Speaking to Collider, Duncan touched upon when he first learned of the end of his character’s journey.

He explained: “I found out just before the beginning of the season. Because I was optioned for six seasons.

“But yeah, it kind of finally ran its course, and they dropped the bomb on me before we started filming the season.”

It certainly looks like Murtagh’s death was final – and it certainly was in the book series.

But fans of the franchise have already become curious as to whether the character could make a return in the next few seasons.

When asked about Murtagh’s resurrection or return, Duncan laughed in response.

He then replied: “I don’t know about that!”

While this response doesn’t sound positive, it also doesn’t look like Murtagh’s return is out of the question entirely.

Meanwhile, fans were also ecstatic during the episode, as they saw the return of Graham McTavish as Buck Mackenzie.

Excited by his return, one fan wrote on Twitter: “Seeing this face was a surprise! Great choice bringing Graham back.”

Another viewer said: “Best episode of this season. Still crying over the death of Murtagh. Sam’s performance is Emmy worthy. The appearance of Graham Mctavish was a pleasant surprise. Well done Outlander.”

“It really was so great to be back with people I’ve worked with so much before and to work with great people like Richard for the first time.”
