The son of Pastor Mason Young (played by Michael Mosley) and his wife Grace (Bethany Anne Lind) has been a liability for the Byrdes throughout the second and third seasons of Ozark.

Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) and his wife Wendy (Laura Linney) are thrown into the middle of a war between the Ozark region’s local crime families when a money laundering scheme with the Mexico cartel goes badly wrong.

Mason’s pregnant wife Grace was taken by the Snell family in season one, with the second season confirming she had been killed due to posing a threat to the family’s heroin business.

This left the Youngs’ newborn baby, Zeke, without a mother and is taken into police custody during season two.

After a tense altercation between Marty and Mason the Pastor is killed, and Zeke briefly becomes part of the Byrde family.

Marty and Wendy attempt to create a wholesome family image for the suspicious media, but the baby later catches the eye of Darlene Snell (Lisa Emery).

The Bible-obsessed criminal matriarch formed a reluctant partnership with the Byrdes, though both families are highly distrustful of each other throughout the series.

At the end of season two, Darlene shaves the head of the Byrde’s teenage son, Jonah (Skylar Gaertner) to intimidate Marty into handing over baby Zeke.

When Marty concedes to her demands, some fans were shocked to see the normally level-headed and meticulous money launderer make the decision to hand over a vulnerable baby to such an unstable individual.

However, some fans have taken to Reddit to justify Marty’s actions, proposing the choice all stems back to the shocking murder of Pastor Mason.

Redditor MrBoshido posted: “I think Marty is afraid of having Zeke in their house because he reminds him about killing the Pastor, so he took the easiest solution and gave him to that nut job.”

The financial advisor turned money launderer has been wracked with guilt for a significant portion of the three seasons of Ozark, especially when he makes the painful decision to kill Zeke’s father.

Furthermore, Marty had previously attempted to manipulate Mason into thinking his wife had simply left him rather than being kidnapped by the Snells.

With baby Zeke in the house, Marty would have a constant reminder of his wrongdoings and was most likely keen to find the new member of the family a new home.

Other Ozark viewers took to the comments with other explanations, shedding more light on one of Marty’s most pivotal decisions throughout the series.

One fan added: “That’s one of the few, if not the only, things I side with Wendy over Marty on. He gave the baby up to a psycho?”

“Of course, Darlene wouldn’t hurt Zeke and she’d protect him with her life, but the audience knows that, I don’t think Marty knew that.”

While another responded: “I think it was a ‘We’re in the middle of handling s*** with the cartel and the KC Mob, we don’t have time to go to war with the local hillbillies’ situation.

“I think Marty at least vaguely intends to get rid of Darlene and get the kid back at some point.”

Netflix has yet to confirm Ozark for a fourth season, though fans are hopeful another instalment is on the way, so there may be even more revelations about the fate of baby Zeke to come.

Ozark seasons 1-3 are available to stream on Netflix.
