Sam Heughan, best known for his role in Outlander, recently opened up about the complexities of playing his latest character in The Couple Next Door.

He shared the unique challenges he faced in bringing this ‘ambiguous’ character to life, differing significantly from his previous roles.

In this new series, Heughan navigates a character filled with depth and mystery, revealing the intricacies of his acting process.

His insights shed light on the artistic journey he undertook to embody this new, multifaceted role, demonstrating his versatility as an actor.

Speaking to Hello, he shared that the toughest part of his role wasn’t the intimate scenes or action-packed motorcycle chases.

Instead, Heughan found mastering a northern accent was the most difficult part of his new role. And that task was made even more difficult by the filming location.

“For me, the accent was a new one. I was doing a northern or Leeds accent, but we were filming in Belgium and the Netherlands mostly, so you have a lot of very different accents in your ear. For me, that was quite challenging,” he explained.

The Outlander star worked closely with the team to perfect his speech, turning the challenge into a collaborative and enjoyable process.

The actor noted that the daily effort to get the accent right was a rewarding part of his experience on set.

Sam also opened up about why he was eager to tackle a role so different from Jamie Fraser.

He mentioned that after a decade on Outlander, finding varied roles that also fit his schedule was challenging.

The timing of Channel 4’s The Couple Next Door lined up perfectly, coming right after he wrapped up the latest season of Outlander.

“For me, I read the scripts and I just jumped at the chance,” Heughan shared. “I just love this character and it’s very different to what I’ve played before, he’s rather ambiguous. You think he’s one thing and by the end, you feel differently about him.”

The Couple Next Door revolves around two couples whose lives become entwined, starting with excitement and leading to eventual tragedy.

Like Outlander, Heughan filmed some intimate scenes, this time with his co-star, Eleanor Tomlinson from Poldark.

To make the experience more comfortable, the crew brought on an intimacy coordinator, just like on Outlander.

The cast also includes Jessica De Gouw from The Secrets She Keeps as Heughan’s character’s wife, Becka, and Alfred Enoch from How to Get Away With Murder as Evie’s husband, Pete Thomas.
