Gary Windass (Mikey North) has wreaked havoc over the past year in Coronation Street, as he ventured further and further down a dark path and became a shell of his former self. His life of crime has made him someone to fear, but he finds himself in a rather scary situation over the festive season.
Viewers have seen Gary evolve into quite a dark character over the last couple of months. From proving instrumental in the death of Rana Habeeb (Bhavna Limbachia), to murdering Rick Neelan (Greg Wood), he’s a far cry from the Gary we all know and love, and his descent into darkness has only gotten worse in recent weeks, as he’s been playing games with arch rival Derek (Craig Els).
That’s very much set to continue into the big Christmas episode, as the former builder goes out of his way to sabotage Derek’s one last chance to prove himself a good dad to his kids.
With a heartbroken Derek feeling like he’s got nothing to lose, he hits the bottle, before seeking revenge on Gary. In what promise to be spectacular scenes, the two characters face off in Winter Wonderland — and with animosity aplenty — it’s going to be an unmissable showdown.
In fact, there were even some stunts involved. Discussing the filming of the episode in question, actor Mikey said: ‘It was a nice experience — nice fight with Derek at top of helter skelter. We had stunt men but did most ourselves.’
‘The guy that played Derek was fantastic — he played Trunchbull in the tour of Matilda musical — brilliant actor and the best drunk acting I’ve ever seen. Late nights up helter skelters chasing me round with a gun. He did a lot of his own stunts, and put the stuntman aside.’
Yes, chaos ensues as Derek points a gun at all those around him, desperate for revenge on Gary. Who will find themselves in the firing line has yet to be revealed, but it’s safe to say that this is one festive season Gary’s not going to forget any time soon.
One to watch: Wednesday 25th December at 7:30pm on ITV.
