THE LARKINS star Bradley Walsh has revealed there's one thing missing from the Darling Buds of May reboot.
The actor and presenter admitted he was unsure about reviving the classic tale and there was something in particular he chose not to do in the role.
Pop Larkin was made famous by Sir David Jason during the 1990s, but when the series returns this weekend 61-year-old Bradley will be stepping into the role.
And he warned fans expecting to hear the Pop Larkin's popular 'Perfik!' phrase throughout the series may be disappointed.
Bradley spoke to Radio Times and revealed he hasn’t brought back Pop’s well known catchphrase.
He explained: "He says it in the books, of course, but it became such an iconic catchphrase in the 90s that we decided not to go back there.
"We used the word once, maybe twice, in the whole series."
Bradley – who is a well known face across TV with presenting gigs which include ITV's The Chase – also added that despite his concerns about doing the reboot, he feels the nation needs slower more gentle dramas after the pandemic.
The Larkins has been adapted by Men Behaving Badly writer Simon Nye, who also penned The Durrells for ITV, and is a new take on the novel by H.E. Bates.
Set in the Fifties, it tells the story of a close-knit family living a life full of love and laughter in the Kent countryside.
When Bradley took on the role, it would have been tempting to try to copy the charisma that Only Fools And Horses legend Sir David brought to the part.
But the actor confesses he did not know much about the show when he started filming and based his version of Pop on two old friends.
He explained: “I didn’t know the books and I’d maybe watched one episode of the show back in the day, so it wasn’t really my area of expertise.
“The way I based Pop is on two people that I know really well. They will be thrilled to know it’s them, but I’m not going to tell them.
“When it’s all over and we’re done and dusted, then I’ll tell them. But if they can’t guess it, they’re not living on the same planet.”
The Larkins begins on ITV at 8pm on Sunday, October 10.
