The Pale Horse: Who wanted Mark Easterbrook dead? Did Hermia want to kill him?

The Pale Horse on the BBC is a murder mystery based on the Agatha Christie novel of the same name. Wealthy antiques dealer Mark Easterbrook (played by Rufus Sewell) found his name on a list of victims who all ended up dead. In the series he tries to find out who ordered a hit on him.

In the series Mark believes it is his second wife Hermia (Kaya Scodelario), who paid the witches to kill him.

David Ardingly (Henry Lloyd-Hughes) says to Mark he needs to think about who hates him enough to want him dead.

He knows his wife is not happy with him for lying to her about where he had been the night of Thomasina Tuckerton’s (Poppy Gilbert) death.

The couple do not really care for each other and Mark is sure she has ordered him to die for not loving her.

Another possible answer is Mark’s first wife Delphine (Georgina Campbell) who died after being electrocuted by Mark.

In the series she visits the three witches to ask if she will make Mark happy.

The witches tell her the marriage will not last and he will soon be married to someone else.

She could have paid the witches to kill him out of anger, before she was murdered.

However, at the end of the last episode it is revealed Mark’s name was never meant to be on the list.

The only reason he came to be caught up in the plot was because the witches mentioned his name to Jessie Davis (Madeleine Bowyer).

They said his wife Delphine had recently come to visit them, asking about their marriage.

Jessie then reported his name back to Zachariah Osborne (Bertie Carvel), who was being paid to kill the victims the whole time.

Osborne then saw Mark as an obstacle, and was worried he may figure out the truth.

He must have asked Jessie to put his name on the list so he could get Mark out of the picture.

He made Mark believe dark magic was causing the other victims to die unexpectedly.

Osborne had been poisoning Mark to make his hair fall out, and Mark was none the wiser of his plan.

By the end of the episode, it is not clear whether Mark dies or not.

In the last scene he picks up a newspaper with a picture of himself on the front page.

The paper has a headline revealing his own tragic death, but then the screen fades to black.
