Steve Fletcher on why he wears two pairs of glasses
Beverley Swain, from Sussex, was hoping Steve Fletcher would be able to fix an item which conjured up precious memories for her on Thursday’s episode of The Repair Shop.
She presented host Jay Blades and Steve with her father’s magic table which had a hidden compartment.
Beverley explained her father died 20 years ago and the table had stirred up memories of him “in a nice way”.
She said her father would use a lever in the magic table which would allow him to pull out a rabbit or some flowers from it.
However, the mechanism was broken as it would not close properly and it was very loud once it opened – even making Steve jump.

Turning to Steve, Jay asked him: “Are you up for this one Steve?”
Steve took a deep breath before explaining: “I think so, I’ve not seen anything like this before.
“My mind is boggling already at how I am going to do this or what I am going to do.”
Beverley said she wanted the item to look brighter than it did too as the paint had chipped around the edges, so Will Kirk gave it a fresh lick of paint.

Later on in the episode, Steve got to work trying to repair the mechanism and he soon figured out why the latch was not working.
He knew the metal parts of it needed smoothing down and polishing to make the item work properly again.
After the filing down of a pin, Steve said: “Brilliant, once I have lubricated it down, that should be as quiet as quiet. I just need to pop it into the table.”
After putting the table back together, Steve was pleased he had successfully repaired the item.
When Beverley returned to the famous BBC barn at the end of the episode to see the renovated table, she started sobbing.
“It’s perfect, isn’t it?” She said. “Thank you, what a privilege to have somebody so skilled to make it come alive again.”
The Repair Shop episodes are available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
