The Secrets She Keeps continues tonight (Tuesday, July 7) at 9pm on BBC One. The Australian thriller is based on the novel of the same name by Michael Robotham. Laura Carmichael is an English film and television actress from Southampton, England.
The Secrets She Keeps fans will most likely recognise Carmichael from her role as Lady Edith Crawley in Downtown Abbey.
Carmichael played the part of Lady Edith Crawley from 2010 until 2015.
Viewers may also recognise her as Maddy Stevenson in Marcella, appearing alongside Anna Friel, Nicholas Pinnock and Jamie Bamber.

Her other television credits include The Heart of Thomas Hardy, End of Our Street, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
In 2014, Carmichael starred as Henriette in the film Madame Bovary, alongside Mia Wasikowska, Rhys Ifans, Ezra Miller, Logan Marshall-Green, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Olivier Gourmet, and Paul Giamatti.
One year later, she played Seph in the black comedy film Burn, Burn, Burn based on the 1957 Jack Kerouac novel On the Road.
In Burn Burn Burn, she starred alongside The Games’ Chloe Pirrie.
Carmichael portrayed Muriel Williams in the drama film A United Kingdom, alongside Rosamund Pike and David Oyelowo.
The actress has also had a successful stage career, making her West End debut in Uncle Vanya opposite Friel and Samuel West in October 2012.
She then went onto star in Jamie Lloyd’s production of The Maids, starring opposite Orange Is the New Black’s Uzo Abuda.
Her other stage credits include Plenty, Reasons for Living and The Tempest.
Carmichael attended the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and has been in a relationship with her Downtown Abbey co-star Michael C. Fox since 2018.

In The Secrets She Keeps, Carmichael plays the role of Agatha Fyfle.

She said: “[Agatha] is this dark character, but unlike lots of thrillers it really focuses on her emotional journey.
“So you understood the trauma that she’s been through and what has led her to where she is.
“It felt very unique of this genre to have this about two women and their desires to be mothers, and the need to be the perfect mum and how that flipped into being something quite dangerous.”
She added: “Everyone has their secrets, and everyone has these internal battles going on, and so from the outset, there’s this undercurrent of unease from all the characters; they’re all going through something.”
The Secrets She Keeps airs Mondays and Tuesdays on BBC One at 9pm
