Robert Sheehan – who plays Klaus – explained to The Sun's TV Mag why it was quite apt to have the second season set in that particular decade.
He said: "One thing that was nice because our show is always harping on about the apocalypse and that was, I think a clever period of time to choose – early 60s because we had just had the Cuban missile crisis.
"We were living in a genuinely apocalyptic world.Everybody thought it was their last day every day, which actually is an interesting thing because I don’t think the apocalypse affects the siblings of the Umbrella Academy like the way it affects regular people.
"But it was nice that historically we were taken back to perhaps the most apocalyptic time in the history of humanity, so I quite like it."
His co-star Tom Hopper, who plays Luther, added: "It’s quite apt that it’s coming out this section of this year, really after going through what we’ve gone through, with what’s going on with the world.
"It just feels very apt. I just hope to God that this world does not have to have the Umbrella Academy to save them."
The pair also opened up about their alter ego's outfits for the season, with Robert revealing: "That’s not to say Klaus has taken full advantage of the 60s and the show might even hint and nudge at Klaus being an instrumental figure in bringing in the aesthetics of the 60s.
"He was synonymous with the later 60s. Klaus might have been this future trigger who actually helped to bring a lot of that stuff about much like the Merry Pranksters or something.
"That was kind of model, the inspiration template that the writers used when creating Klaus’ journey in the 60s."
Meanwhile Tom said of Luther: "Luther is not comfortable with that body and I just want everyone to remember he is an awkward smaller man in a huge giant body, and one he is not comfortable in so as soon as I put that suit on and I’m immediately uncomfortable in it, it really kind of makes me feel more like Luther.
"Although Luther, this year, I feel like he might have been on the vegan diet for a little while. He’s slimmed right down, and I think he’s more comfortable this season in it than he was last season.
"He sorts of sees it a little bit more. He’s in the public eye a little bit more with that body and so he trimmed up a little bit, so I think more comfortable this year."
Umbrella Academy season two premieres on Netflix on Friday July 31. To read more on Umbella Academy pick up Saturday's free copy of TV Mag, only in The Sun.
