Where is Vienna Blood on BBC set?

Vienna Blood is set in 1906 Vienna which at the time was a “hotbed” of philosophy, science and art.

Author of the Liebermann novel series, Frank Tallis explained: “Vienna – around 1900 – was an extremely exciting place.

“Revolutionary ideas were emerging in all areas of human endeavour: Art, literature, philosophy, science, and most notably, psychiatry.

“One could also argue that Vienna in 1900 was the birthplace of modernism. Psychoanalytic thinking was an essential ingredient of this ‘modern’ outlook.”

He added:“It has shaped how we understand ourselves and our relationships.

“You may not consider yourself a Freudian, but you certainly think like one. You probably accept that parts of your mind function unconsciously, acknowledge Freudian ‘slips’ and use words like ‘defensive’.

“W.H Auden recognized this extraordinary depth of cultural penetration when he wrote, after Freud’s death in 1939, that he – Freud – is “no more a person now, but a whole climate of opinion.”

Across three episodes, the series follows Max Liebermann (played by Matthew Beard) a young British-Jewish doctor who is studying under the psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud.

While in Austria, Max meets an Austrian Detective Inspector Oskar Rheinhardt (Juergen Maurer) who is trying to solve a strange murder case.

Max, who is interested in studying neurology and is fixated by analysing psychopaths, convinces Oskar to let him observe his work. Fascinated by Max’s intelligence, they end up working together to solve the crime.

“Occasionally we have to hide something of now but most of the time the natural authenticity is very good.

“And we have a fantastic costume and makeup designers so together we can step back into this time in history.

“For us, the authenticity is very important and our production designer Bertram is a genius!

“He will go into an empty room with the correct architecture for 1906 and will build and create, and bring in furniture and props from the period and before you know it, you‘ve stepped back over 100 years.”

The series is directed by Academy Award and Emmy nominee Robert Dornhelm and Cracks in the Concrete Umut Dag.
