The hype around Tommy Egan’s spinoff Power Book IV: Force continues, especially after the events in Power Book II: Ghost. Tommy disappeared from New York in the series finale of the original show, but there’s still lots to come from the character. Here’s everything you need to know about his spinoff, from the possible release date to the storyline.
WARNING: This article continues spoilers for Power Book II: Ghost Season 1, Episode 10.
Where Tommy Egan’s story left off
After his best friend, Ghost, was murdered and his drug operation went awry, Tommy left New York for California in the finale season of Power. However, he briefly returned in the season one finale of Power Book II: Ghost to get revenge on Tasha St. Patrick for trying to frame him for Ghost’s murder.
After he failed, Tariq approached him with a deal, under which he would help him fake his death and therefore avoid prosecution. Tommy agreed and went through with it, but in the end, he still wasn’t satisfied.
In the finale moments of the finale, he once again tried to kill Tasha, but his plan was foiled by Tariq and Monet Tejada, who pulled a gun on him.
“Do what you gotta do, because, Tariq, if you let me go, I’m gonna go after Tasha,” Tommy declared. “I ain’t never gonna stop.”
Tariq told Tommy he didn’t want to kill him and tried to reason with him. But Tommy continued to give him the cold shoulder. Before walking away, he coldly told Tariq, “We ain’t never gonna see each other again.”
‘Power Book IV: Force’ will pick up after those events
Power Book IV: Force will focus on Tommy’s new life now that he’s done with New York. Actor Joseph Sikora, who plays the character, told Entertainment Weekly in a report published on Jan. 3 that one of the big questions will be whether he can survive in the drug business on his own.
“I think that it’s going to take all facets of Tommy that we’ve built up to until now to not only survive but to potentially thrive — and to potentially leave,” he continued. “You don’t know if it’s going to be one city and then another city and if he’s going to keep bopping or what connections need to be made.”
“But what does need to happen is that we need to see how fast or how slow Tommy analyzes and adapts to a new situation. Is gangster the same all over America? Or is there a specific gangster out of New York? Is that able to adapt? I think we’re going to have a lot of Capone references,” Sikora added.
Going on, Sikora also spoke on theories that Tommy will chase down Tasha for her betrayal. “Tommy is not going to deal with Tasha unless Tasha becomes real competition for him or the biggest drug dealer in New York City,” he said. But with Tasha in witness protection, the chances of that happening seem extremely low.
So when does ‘Power Book IV: Force’ air?
So far, there isn’t an official release date for Power Book IV: Force. But series creator and showrunner Courtney Kemp told Deadline that production will begin in 2021.
“We’re going to start shooting in the new year and we’re all really excited about it,” said Kemp. “It definitely is in terms of its violence and sexuality very old school Power.“
By usual standards, this suggests the show could debut as early as late 2021 or in the earlier part of 2022. In the meantime, prepare for Power Book III: Raising Kanan, which is set to release in the summer of 2021.
