Where is BBC’s Cardinal filmed? From Sudbury, Northern Ontario to North Bay – The Sun

CANADIAN crime drama Cardinal is back on BBC Two for its fourth series and duo John Cardinal and Lise Delorme are back on duty for the final time.

Cardinal follows the titular character, John Cardinal as he hunts down a serial killer in a fictional city of Algonquin Bay. Filmed in Northern Ontario, the atmospheric backdrop gives the show its melancholic character.

Although we don't know what the new series will bring, there's no doubt Cardinal and Delorme will continue fighting crime in Algonquin Bay – so we can expect the filming locations will be similar to previous series.

Where is BBC's Cardinal filmed?

Sudbury, Northern Ontario

Sudbury is the largest city in Northern Ontario, population-wise.

It is a city of lakes – the community is built upon 330 lakes, the biggest of which is Lake Wanapitei.

Executive producer Julia Sereny remembers shooting the first season in Sudbury.

She said: “It was about minus 40. It was so cold that our sound recordist could not get his truck started.

"So we had no sound because we had to go and pick him up from afar.”

“When we tried to affix something — I can’t remember what it was — to a camera car, the windows shattered because it was so cold … Welcome to the north.”

North Bay, Northern Ontario

North Bay is the city where Giles Blunt, author of the John Cardinal detective novels that the series is based on, grew up.

The city is nestled on the shore of Lake Nipissing, and the stunning views attract tourists from Ottawa and Toronto.

Rumour has it the final season of Cardinal was predominantly filmed in North Bay.

Atikameksheng Anishnawbek

Just south of Sudbury, Atikameksheng Anishnawbek is an indigenous territory in Ontario.

Less than 400 people live in the area.

In 2016, the Cardinal crew did some location filming on the reserve. It has also been a filming location for the films of Darlene Naponse, including Cradlesong and Every Emotion Costs.
