Why did Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder break up?

JOHNNY Depp and Winona Ryder were one of Hollywood’s most talked about couples in the early 1990s.

The young sweethearts, labelled at the time as “Jinona,” dated for four years and reportedly remain good friends today.

Why did Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder break up?

The pair were engaged just five months after they had started dating as Depp labeled their romance as “love at first sight.”

The actor even went to the lengths of inking a tattoo on his right arm that read “Winona Forever” as they co-starred in together in the 1990 film Edward Scissorhands.

“I sort of was in shock,” Ryder admitted in a 1991 interview with Rolling Stone after Depp’s tatt was revealed.

“I kept thinking it was going to wash off or something. I couldn’t believe it was real. I mean, it’s a big thing because it’s so permanent!”

Depp later added, “It ain’t goin’ nowhere.”

However, the actor's dedicated inking was ultimately in vein as the pair called off their engagement in June 1993.

At the time, Depp hinted that the pair had succumbed to social and media pressure.

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, he said: “It’s very hard to have a personal life in this town.

“My relationship with Winona, it was my mistake to be as open as we were, but I thought if we were honest it would destroy that curiosity monster.

“Instead, it fed it, gave people license to feel they were part of it.”

In an interview with Elle, Winona described it as her “first real break-up” and “first heartbreak”.

She said: “I think it was really ironic because everybody else just thought I had everything in the world, you know, I had no reason to be depressed, everything was sort of at its peak but inside I was completely lost.”

How long were Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder married for?

Depp and Ryder never made it down the aisle, calling time on their relationship before tying the knot.

Johnny went on to have further high profile relationships, but the two reportedly maintained a strong friendship.

In 2020, in a witness statement relating to the court battle between Depp and Amber Heard, the actress defended her ex-fiancé.

In an official statement filed in a US court, Ryder said she was “shocked, confused and upset” by the allegations and said Depp was “never violent or abusive” towards her.

“I obviously was not there during his marriage to Amber but, from my experience, which was so wildly different, I was absolutely shocked, confused and upset when I heard the accusations against him,” she said.

“The idea that he is an incredibly violent person is the farthest thing from the Johnny I knew and loved. I cannot wrap my head around these accusations. He has never been violent or abusive towards anybody I have seen.”

A daughter, Lily-Rose Melody Depp was born in 1999.

Their son, John Christopher "Jack" Depp III, was born in 2002.

Speaking in February 2009 about having children, Depp said it had given him “a real foundation, a real strong place to stand in life, in work, in everything."
