Why Rami Malek Thinks He Might Be a 'Bond Girl'

Rami Malek is one of the hottest actors of the moment, thanks to his career-defining role as Freddie Mercury in the 2018 Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. He’s also earned a reputation as an actor who is very serious about his craft, even if he doesn’t mind poking a little fun at himself.

Recently, Malek appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and dished about his role in the upcoming, highly-anticipated James Bond film. Malek will play a major role in the film but funnily enough, he’s slightly convinced he’s now a “Bond Girl.”

How did Rami Malek become famous?

Born in 1981, Malek was drawn to the performing arts at an early age and went on to study theater after he graduated high school. After receiving his degree in 2003, Malek moved to Los Angeles where he pursued his acting career.

In the early days, Malek didn’t have much success and found himself stereotyped to play villainous roles that didn’t hold much creative appeal for him. In 2015, Malek got his first big break when he appeared in the series Mr. Robot, playing an antisocial computer hacker named Elliot Anderson. His work in Mr. Robot got everyone to sit up and take notice, and it likely led to Malek scoring the biggest opportunity of his career thus far.

In 2018, Malek appeared in the big-budget film Bohemian Rhapsody, portraying the legendary rock and roll frontman Freddie Mercury. Malek’s performance was universally praised among critics and fans, with original members of the band Queen even lauding him as the perfect Freddie Mercury. Ultimately, Malek won numerous awards for his work in the film, including the Academy Award for Best Actor and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama.

What role will Rami Malek be playing in the new Bond film?

After the smashing success of Bohemian Rhapsody, everyone wondered what the next big film for Malek would be. After all, it would be a tough act to follow. Malek ended up surprising everyone when he announced that he had signed on to portray the villain in Bond 25, the latest installment in the legendary James Bond series.

The plot of the movie has been kept tightly under wraps, and the only detail that Malek has revealed about his character is that he definitely won’t be playing a religious fundamentalist terrorist. Reportedly, Malek “refused to entertain” the idea of playing a character like that, and the director of the film, Cary Fukunaga, personally reassured him that the character was much deeper than that.

It is also known that Malek’s character will be somewhat of a tech genius, which is appropriate considering he first shot to fame playing a hacker on Mr. Robot. Past that, fans will have to wait until April 8, 2020 to learn specifics of the film, and how exactly Malek’s character will make life difficult for 007.

Why does Rami Malek think he is a ‘Bond Girl’?

In early October, Malek appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to talk about his role in the upcoming Bond film. Malek revealed that during filming a scene with Daniel Craig, who has played Bond for over a decade, the actor picked him up and kissed him. Malek stated that since Craig initiated the kiss, he asked the question: “Does that make me a Bond girl?”

Malek’s lips were sealed past that, and he wasn’t able to give Colbert or the studio audience much insight into the film’s plot. However, it seems likely that the latest Bond film will be an absolute smash, and add even more accolades to Malek’s impressive roster of achievements.
