The Grand Tour has had seven specials seeing Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May venture all around the world testing their cars and each other. Their latest special, Lochdown, is set in the UK due to current travel restrictions as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. But are they heading overseas again?
Will The Grand Tour be set outside the UK again?
When the latest special begins, Clarkson opens by saying: “Hello, and welcome to The Grand Tour which is not coming to you this time from the top of a volcano or the bottom of the sea.”
Instead, the latest special begins in Berwick-upon-Tweed, just south of the border of Scotland.
This is the first time one of The Grand Tour Presents specials has taken place within the UK, for the simple reason of ongoing travel restrictions.
Originally, the latest special was planned to take place abroad but the showrunners had to change their plans due to the chosen location being put on the Red List.
The originally chosen location has been revealed to be Russia, which the government still recommends the public not to travel to.
After Lochdown, the next special has been announced to take place in Wales, in order to keep the show going while restrictions are continuing.
Filming on the next special will begin soon as production began immediately after the Scotland episode, with a third planned for February.
Andy Wilman, the executive producer on the series revealed the originally chosen location.
Wilman recently sat down with Metro to discuss the situation with the specials, offering an insight on where the next episode could be set.
Wilman explained: “We were going to shoot one in Russia last March when the world shut down.
“That one we still want to complete because we’d set it up. There’s still a good story there, so we’re going do that one hopefully when things get better.
“Then we need to do another one. Which is TBD [to be decided].”
It seems that the Russian trip was changed to Scotland at the last minute but plans for the special have not been completely abandoned.
The future of the show’s locations will depend on the government’s travel restrictions.
However, fans can rest assured that there is still plenty of The Grand Tour to come down the road.
Despite being set in the UK, the show still provides fans with the content they love, as the boys head across Scotland in three classic American cars.
The usual antics ensue, with all three cars suffering from the Scottish roads they were never supposed to be driven on.
Fans have reacted to the latest special on social media, with many of them taking to Twitter to share their opinions on the show’s trip to Scotland.
One fan said: “Not going to lie the new grand tour special is good!” (sic)
“The Grand Tour Lochdown, utterly brilliant. Hilarious. Crying,” another commented.
A third wrote: “LOVING The Grand Tour in Scotland. Such a joy seeing the landscapes of home.”
The Grand Tour is available to watch exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
