Forget His Houses, Johnny Depp Once Owned a French Village, a Private Island, and a Yacht He Sold to J.K. Rowling

The lifestyles of the rich and famous provide endless fascination for the public. A star who has totally embraced all things lavish in style — and makes no secret of it — is Johnny Depp. Throughout his notable career, the actor has reportedly purchased 14 properties. And they are just the tip of the iceberg. If you can forget his houses, Depp once owned a French Village, a private island, and a yacht — the latter of which he sold to a very famous author.

Johnny Depp’s many assets go beyond his houses

For many celebrities, fast cars, beautiful mansions, and beautiful clothing and jewelry are enough to satisfy their desire to impress the world. Though Johnny Depp enjoys his cars, jewelry, and houses, he wants much more.

Depp’s acquired an inventory of cars estimated to exceed $1 million. He owns several large homes, all decorated to match his specific taste. In each of these homes, he has paid staff to take care of them. And while he doesn’t own a private plane, he spends a small fortune paying for private plane travel.

However, it is his other assets that are jaw-dropping in their luxury. When a village went bankrupt, he bought it! The “Le Plan-de-la-Tour” is 10 miles from Saint-Tropez, France. Restoration costs were estimated at around $10 million.

Beyond that, when he was starring in the film Pirates of the Caribbean, he saw bought a cluster of islands. He purchased the island in 2004 for a cool $3.6 million. All total, it is 45 acres and features six beaches. He named two of them after his children, Lily-Rose and Jack.

How would he travel to these islands? With his own yacht, no less. The yacht, built in 2001, is 156-feet and can reach speeds of up to 12 knots. Its name is Amphitriteand not only is it three stories and many rooms, he has it fully equipped with water sport equipment, a cinema, a salon, and more to ensure everyone on it can enjoy themselves. He sold it to J.K. Rowling in 2016.

Divorce made Johnny Depp sell his lavish penthouse

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard had a short but volatile wedded relationship between 2015 and 2016 after meeting on the set of their movie The Rum Diary in 2009. When their divorce finalized, Heard was awarded $7 million in the settlement.

This prompted Depp to sell his lavish, five side-by-side penthouse suites, which he had bought for $1.8 million over time since 1995. According to Top Ten Real Estate Deals, when the sale was completed in 2017, Depp made almost $10.9 million on it. This left him plenty to settle up with the divorce settlement.

Depp’s legal battle

In 2022, Depp entered into a legal battle with Heard. The pair faced off in court, with the trial broadcast for all the world to see. And this is far from the first time he’s spent money on lawyers.

Despite all his legal issues, Depp still has amassed a small fortune during his career. His films often bring him $20 million per film and contribute to an estimated $100 million net worth, according to Celebrity Net Worth.

In 2017, Depp also sued The Management Group, which oversaw his finances. He claimed they made him lose tens of millions of dollars. The Management Group counter-sued, saying that Depp was overspending recklessly.

Regardless of the legal issues, many people still support Depp. In fact, some even want Heard to pay him for all of the trouble the case has caused.
