How BBC newsreader Huw Edwards, 58, shed 3st and became ‘Insta-hunk’

BBC newsreader Huw Edwards once admitted he was, "one of those people who can put on weight simply by looking at a Twix."

But his lifelong struggle came to an abrupt end last year when he embarked on a new fitness regime and shed a staggering three stone.

At 58, the News At Ten presenter has become an Instagram sensation thanks to his regular gym updates and motivational advice.

He captioned one moody black and white photo of himself on the boxing ring floor: "Confession — I find this really tough. But to all the over 50s out there who want to be happier physically and mentally — if I can do it, you can."

But what are the secrets behind his dramatic transformation?

Now weighing just 13 stone, Huw's journey began when he started training with ex-boxer Clinton McKenzie.

He swears by just two boxing sessions a week and also does suspension training, which uses gravity and your body weight to work the muscles.

"The boxing training is going pretty well. I do my boxing two or three times a week," he previously told Mirror Online.

"I do TRX too, but only once a week in the park otherwise people will think I am going completely mad."

He's also hired a stylist to the stars, Gareth Scourfield, who has kitted him out with custom-made suits to show off his buff new frame.

Gareth has plenty of experience in dressing celebs, and also advises Bodyguard hunk Richard Madden and dapper Rocketman star Taron Egerton.

"I feel better than I have for years and it’s great getting so many compliments," father-of-five Huw told The Sun.

His Instagram updates are said to be the talk of the town over at the Beeb, although oddly, Huw has seen a drop in fan mail since acquiring his buff body.

"I don’t get fan mail anymore though. Letters don’t come. I used to have a bundle of mail to open every week," he told The Mirror, admitting weather presenter Carol Kirkwood gets more than he does.

"Maybe she has more appeal than me. People just don’t write in. It is very rare for you to get a letter. l used to like the process of opening the envelope and finding God knows what inside… I used to like that.

"You may get an email to the BBC central thing and they will forward that to you.”

Meanwhile, his new levels of fitness mean he would consider branching out into a new area of the BBC – entertainment.

Huw – who is married to BBC producer Vicky Flind – admitted that if Strictly Come Dancing called, he would be game.

"I think I could move a bit more now and I'm lighter on my feet," he said.

"Life is about challenges. So yes, why not, but as yet no one has asked me."
