Stanley Johnson claims son Boris is ‘pro-European’ and ‘not right-wing populist’

Stanley Johnson faced boos tonight after claiming Boris Johnson is "pro-European".

The audience at Channel 4's Alternative Election Night coverage also laughed at 79-year-old after he said his son was "not a right-wing populist".

Former I'm A Celebrity star Stanley baffled viewers with his bold claims after an exit poll predicted his son's Conservative Party will have a landslide victory.

The massive survey predicted the Tories have won 368 seats in Parliament – the biggest majority since Margaret Thatcher's in 1987.

Channel 4 viewers said they were switching off and could not bear to watch any more after hearing Stanley's "total nonsense".

Stanley said: "All this stuff about him being a right-wing populist. That's not the child I knew I tell you. He's not a right-wing populist. He was pro-European."

The crowd gasped, while presenter Krishnan Guru-Murthy called Stanley out on his comments.

Stanley continued: "OK folks, why do you think he is called Alexander Boris Cecil Johnson? Because he has about four different streaks of Europeanism in him."

Comedian Katharine Ryan pointed out that babies don't name themselves to cheers from the audience.

Stanley added: "They don't name themselves. They inherit their DNA I can tell you. That's a man who is as European as you can ever think of.

"The first thing this government will do is to rebuild a bridge to Europe which is going to be so strong nothing is going to knock it down.

Facing claims from Krishnan he was talking "total nonsense", Stanley hit back to defend his son.

He said: "It's so obvious that is what you have to do at this moment. You have to create now a bridge to Europe from the outside. Or another tunnel.

"I'm not worried about this in the slightest. The real tragedy has been this hollow debate on Brexit ."

Channel 4 viewers took to Twitter after listening to Stanley's comments.

One viewer said: "Stanley Johnson has just said that Boris is pro-European! How the F has this charlatan, lying, self-opportunist been allowed to lead our country."

"Cant bear Stanley Johnson for one more minute. #C4AltElection Turned off," added another.

A third said: "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Stanley Johnson's also a tremendous t***."

"What did #C4AltElection expect for having Stanley Johnson on their show, other than booing?," asked a fourth.
