Jimmy Carr pictured for first time since Holocaust joke backlash

Jimmy Carr broke cover this week as the storm of controversy surrounding his Holocaust joke continues to mount.

The 8 Out Of 10 Cats comedian was spotted emerging from his London home alone on Tuesday evening.

Appearing ready for business, Carr looked smart in a light blue blazer with a dark shirt and trousers. The TV star then hopped into a waiting car where he seemed to be more relaxed and removed his jacket.

It’s the first time the 49-year-old has been seen pictured outrage erupted over a joke in his Netflix special His Dark Material, which was released in December.

In the stand-up show, Carr says people ‘never mention the thousands of Gypsies that were killed by the Nazis’ in the Holocaust, because ‘no one ever wants to talk about the positives’.

He has since faced severe backlash from Traveller and Roma charities, anti-fascist organisations and even several MPs including Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that a petition urging Netflix to remove the joke from the special had been signed over 14,000 times.

The charity The Traveller Movement, which started the petition, described the gag as ‘nothing short of a celebration of genocide’.

It goes on: ‘Hundreds of thousands of Gypsies, Roma, and Traveller people were killed in the Holocaust. Roma people call it “Porajmos”, meaning “the devouring”.’

Mr Johnson’s spokesperson condemned the joke on behalf of the PM and said: ‘Those comments are deeply disturbing and it’s unacceptable to make light of genocide.’

When asked if Netflix should pull the show, they added: ‘That will be a matter for them. We are clear that mocking the atrocities of the Holocaust is unacceptable.’

Carr reportedly addressed the controversy on Saturday night during his stand-up show at Whitley Bay Playhouse where, according to The Mirror, a woman in the audience heckled him asking: ‘Are we going to talk about the Holocaust?’

The comic then replied: ‘We are going to talk about cancel culture, the whole thing.

‘We are going to talk about f***ing everything people. Relax.’

He reportedly continued: ‘We are speaking my friends in the last chance saloon. What I am saying on stage this evening is barely acceptable now.

‘In 10 years f***ing forget about it. You are going to be able to tell your grandchildren about seeing this show tonight.’

Carr is also said to have told the audience: ‘The joke that ends my career is already out there,’ and, ‘I am going to get cancelled, that’s the bad news.’
