John Legend Named 2020 High Note Global Prize Recipient

In recognition of his social justice advocacy throughout his career, United Nations Human Rights has awarded John Legend the 2020 High Note Global Prize.

A life-long advocate for social equality, Legend created FreeAmerica, a multi-year culture change campaign focused on ending mass incarceration.

The High Note Global Prize is awarded annually to an extraordinary artist who has promoted social justice causes for over a decade.

Since this global award is supported by United Nations Human Rights, The Grammy Museum and Rolling Stone, it has been referred to as “The Nobel Prize in Music.”

“With this award we celebrate a multitude of advocates, generations of movement leaders who have put their shoulder to the wheel of progress,” Legend said in acceptance video.

He added, “I believe in the power of music to inspire us, to connect our hearts, to give voice to feelings for which words alone won’t suffice, to wake us up out of complacency, to galvanize and fuel social movements.”
