Miley Cyrus Performs Her Song About Liam Hemsworth for the First Time at the VMAs

Miley Cyrus broke hearts and the Internet with her performance of “Slide Away” at the 2019 MTV VMAs tonight. This was the first time the pop singer performed the song, which many have surmised to be about her ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth.

Cyrus’s set was a dramatic one, featuring a black and white filter as she sang centerstage under a single spotlight. She was accompanied by violinists, who sat in formation behind her.

“Slide Away” seemingly explores the deterioration of her 10-year relationship with Hemsworth, with soul-crushing lyrics like, “Once upon a time, it was made for us / Woke up one day, it had turned to dust / Baby, we were found, but now we’re lost / So it’s time to let it go.”

The song also hints at Hemsworth’s rumored partying issues: “I want my house in the hills / Don’t want the whiskey and pills.” People reported, “Everyone always thinks Miley is problematic and immature and a hardcore partier while he’s this chill surfer dude, but that’s actually [not accurate].”

Hemsworth and Cyrus announced their separation in early August, less than a year after they were married. In a statement to E! News, Cyrus’s rep confirmed the breakup, saying, “Ever evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy.” Two weeks after they announced their separation, Hemsworth officially filed for divorce.

Immediately after the breakup went public, Cyrus was spotted sharing PDA with Kaitlynn Carter, a skin care brand founder and Brody Jenner’s ex. The two went on vacation together and sparked dating rumors after paparazzi snapped photos of the two ostensibly kissing. However, some sources have clarified that the two are simply having fun and that the relationship isn’t serious.
