Olly Murs has revealed he was rushed to hospital for an emergency operation on his knee after doctors said he had hours to save his leg.

The 36 year old, who recently said Caroline Flack's death "left a massive hole in his life", said that his surgeon suspected he might have had life-threatening blood poisoning after the metal plate that had been inserted got infected three months after his original operation.

The Voice judge explained that his surgeon called him to say: "You need to come into London now. We need to operate within the next couple of hours. Go and get a bag."

"They had to open me up again in case the infection spread. So it got nasty," Olly said.

Now, the Dear Darlin' hitmaker can laugh about the drama that took place last year, but admitted he didn't immediately tell his girlfriend Amelia Tank about the ordeal because she was "having the time of her life" on a hen weekend in Ibiza.

Olly said that Amelia visited him in hospital as soon as she got off the plane, but the 27 year old was struggling with a horrific hangover from the night before.

"All I could smell was the alcohol. She couldn’t even speak — she’d lost her voice," Olly told The Sun Online.

"I think if anything she needed the bed more than I did. Bless her, she just looked like when you come home from a really heavy weekend."

When he initially went under the knife for his knee operation back in June 2019, he had taken to Instagram to share several snaps of his leg.

At the time, the star explained he was putting on a brave face, but was actually recovering from a "serious knee surgery".

The singer-songwriter later told his 3.4million followers about the operation on his Instagram live. He said: "When I had the operation, my left leg had to be straightened and they put a plate in.

"After three months the plate got infected so then I had to get rushed back into hospital, they thought it was sepsis."

Olly, who recently apologised for pulling a Pringles penis prank on his girlfriend which left fans feeling "disgusted", continued: "It was so important for me to get my leg done because there wouldn't be shows.

"Obviously with this knee I'm not being able to perform on stage to my best ability for my fans.

"I needed to give it a year. I need to do rehab."
