The first season of Netflix’s new romantic period drama series, Bridgerton, is full of surprises. Perhaps the greatest surprise of all: the show (produced by Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal’s Shonda Rhimes) features a soundtrack that causes some serious head scratching.
During Episode 1, when Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) arrives at her first ball and falls for Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page) as they dance together around the ballroom, you might’ve heard a strangely familiar tune. No, you’re not going crazy. That’s Ariana Grande’s “Thank U, Next” playing in the background, performed by Vitamin String Quartet. The Bridgerton series, which has become one of Netflix’s biggest series to date, features covers of more than one noticeable hit song in its string quartet version, from Maroon 5 to Billie Eilish.
“The music for us was kind of an evolution we found when making the show as the cuts were coming in,”Bridgerton creator and showrunner Chris Van Dusen told O. “It really goes to the idea of making this feel different than your other period shows. Whether it’s music or the world of the show, the scripts, the sets, the costumes; it all comes back to infusing things through our own unique modern lens and making things feel relatable to whoever’s watching.”
The soundtrack gives a classical spin to contemporary pop songs to perfectly fit the time of the show, set in 1813 London. Check out all the classical covers in the binge-worthy series Bridgerton, streaming now on Netflix.
