High School Musical: The Musical: The Series on Disney+ stars Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett as teen lovers. With rumors of an off-screen romance that seemed to have concluded in summer 2020 (Rodrigo posted an August 2020 TikTok about a “failed relationship”), Bassett has now been linked to fellow rising star Sabrina Carpenter, and let’s just say this doesn’t appear to sit well with Rodrigo. Her debut single “drivers license” hints at infidelity with a certain older blonde, rumored to be Carpenter. With fan rumors swirling as to whether there’s a love triangle brewing, the trio have remained mum as to that status of their hearts.
So where did all this drama start? Let’s take a look at Carpenter and Bassett’s relationship, and see if the Hate U Give star and Bassett are really more than friends. No matter what, it’s clear these three have more than enough heartbreak to sing about!
Joshua Bassett and Olivia Rodrigo never confirmed their romance
Maybe Olivia Rodrigo does have reason to be upset. Joshua Bassett and Sabrina Carpenter kicked off dating rumors after posting a TikTok video as Sharkboy and Lavagirl in November 2020. The pair were also spotted getting lunch in Los Angeles together in August 2020, per HITC — suspiciously around the time Rodrigo shared a melancholy TikTok about breakups. However, Rodrigo and Bassett never actually confirmed any kind of romance between them. The clues are telling, though.
In Rodrigo’s song “drivers license,” she sings the lyrics, “I guess you didn’t mean what you wrote in that song about me,” and fans are taking that to be calling out Bassett, who previously released two lovestruck singles in 2020, per Vulture. Bassett had his own clap back, quickly announcing on Instagram an upcoming single “Lie Lie Lie” for a Jan. 14 release.
So where does that leave Carpenter in the middle of all this heart-song ballad drama? She hasn’t said anything yet about this love triangle. Could Bassett be her current beau? Only time — and more pop songs — will tell!
