In five episodes, Euphoria season two has proven to be well worth the almost three-year wait. Since the show returned last month, the East Highland crew has experienced highs, lows, and a ton of unexpected drama. This season focuses mainly on Rue’s sobriety and the high schooler’s substance abuse struggle. While viewers are rooting for her to get it together, Zendaya has weighed in making it clear that no one wants better for Rue than the actress who plays her.
The latest episode followed the devastating moments as Rue viscously fought with her mom and sister, who staged an intervention with Jules and Elliot. After screaming hurtful things at her loved ones and breaking up with Jules, Rue stormed into Lexi and Cassie’s house, where she dropped the bomb that Cassie had been sleeping with Nate. With Maddy and the rest of their friends in tow, Rue used the secret relationship as a distraction so that she could creep out of the house undetected.
Zendaya, who won an Emmy award for her breakout role in the hit series in 2020, shared a picture of Rue staring into a mirror while sitting at a table, along with a quote about Rue’s journey this season.

“I think in this show, and this season more specifically, she hits rock bottom,” she began. “It’s my hope for people watching that they still see her as a person worthy of their love. And worthy of their time, and that she has a redemptive quality still, and that we still see the good in her even if she can’t see it in herself.”
Zendaya hopes Euphoria fans extend the compassion they have for Rue’s struggles and transparency with those going through similar situations IRL.”I think that if people can go with her through that, and get to the end, and still have hope for her future, and watch her make the changes and steps to heal and humanize her through her sobriety journey and her addiction, then maybe they can extend that to people in real life,” she said.
Z also explained how much Rue’s character means to her. “I care about her deeply. I also care about the people who care about her because I think many of them share her story of addiction and sobriety, and many of them share a lot of emotional disorders, and I think it’s important that we continue to have that love for her,” she added.
For Zendaya, characters like Rue have a special place in Hollywood. “I think it’s important that we have characters that are flawed,” she closed. “And remember that we are not the worst mistake we’ve ever made. And that redemption is possible.”
