Great British Bake Off star Sandro Farmhouse might have shown off his flair for baking on the 2022 series, soaring all the way to the final, but he also has a keen eye for fashion too, helping Dame Prue Leith with her looks in the tent.

Throughout this year’s competition, Sandro quickly became a fan favourite thanks to his original culinary designs, as well as his innate positivity and warm nature.

While the 30-year-old didn’t walk away with the winner’s trophy, he recently took part in a campaign with Google to showcase the search engine’s Year In Search, creating an incredible, multi-tiered cake with sections paying homage to trending topics including Stranger Things, Wordle and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

During a conversation with Metro.co.uk about the edible Year In Search bake, Sandro opened up about his time on Bake Off, sharing how much of a ‘comfort’ presenters Noel Fielding, 49, and Matt Lucas, 48, were to him when they came over for a chatter.

He also revealed that unbeknownst to viewers at home, he had a hand in making sure Dame Prue, 82, always looked camera ready.

‘Prue was absolutely lovely, I called her Auntie Prue. I loved her colours, I loved her fashion. A little tea for you from the show, I would always help her with her fashion,’ he told us.

‘So she’d have a pocket out, and I’d be like, “Prue! Your pocket!” Put her pocket in, help her with her hair a little bit, if it’s a little bit off. So that was really nice.’

Sandro also showered fellow judge Paul Hollywood, 56, with praise, revealing that the chef is more reserved in person than fans might expect.

‘Paul, he’s really nice. Everyone thinks he’s a bit over confident, but he’s really shy. He’s a Just really down to earth guy,’ he said.

As for Noel and Matt, Sandro admitted that he was ‘surprised’ they weren’t ‘that big of a distraction’ to him when they came over to his station in the middle of challenges.

Google’s 2022 Year In Search

What were the top-searching trends of the year on Google?

Plus, here are some more breakdowns…

Top-searching film: Encanto

Top-searching news event: Queen Elizabeth’s death

Top-searching musician: Diana Ross

Top-searching sports competition: The World Cup

Top-searching TV: Stranger Things

‘Actually they were quite comforting, especially to me, I just found real comfort in them. When either of them came around, I was like… that bit of having a break from doing whatever I’m doing to having a bit of banter was actually well received for me. It helped me relax,’ he said.

Becoming a star of Bake Off comes with perks, including an array of adoring fans descending on the bakers’ social media accounts.

Sandro outlined the difference between fawning fans on Twitter and Instagram, confessing that over on Twitter, messages can become ‘a little bit 18+’ when Bake Off viewers take a fancy to him.

‘The Instagram fans are more child-friendly and it’s nice. People I guess… I guess I’m a pretty person?’ he said bashfully.

Just like his many showstoppers in the tent, Sandro’s Year In Search cake is a true tour de force, bursting with colour as he paid tribute to Pixar film Encanto, Ukraine, Storm Eunice and the late Olivia Newton-John.

The bottom tier of the cake was inspired by one of his favourite TV shows, Stranger Things, which of course returned to Netflix this year with its fourth season, and he honoured the sci-fi drama with the iconic Christmas lights from the show, as well as a ‘rift’ leading to the Upside Down.

At the top of his Year In Search cake was a tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II, who marked 70 years on the throne just a few months before her death at the age of 96.

‘This means a lot more to me as well because I’ve always wanted to do something tributed to the Queen, so I’m glad Google’s given me that opportunity,’ Sandro said.

The Great British Bake Off is available to watch on All 4.
