Kris Van Assche’s tenure at Berluti has been reliably denoted by swathes of bold, vivid color, but that doesn’t mean that the entire output is doused in bright tones. Van Assche’s newest footwear design, the Pulse, restrains its palette to achieve New Wave cool, instead emphasizing a sleek shape and premium craft.
Sportswear inspiration informs the tooled sole unit, which is thick, grippy and color-blocked, with an upper no less indebted to retro flair. Here, shapely panels of canvas, nylon and leather are interwoven with different tones to create a visage that’s light and readable. Hand-stitched accents and stamped Berluti crests embody opulence, in line with the sneaker’s two primary textile choices.
On one hand, there’s the aforementioned mix of canvas, leather and nylon that’s graced with quietly stylish colors and “B” accents. On the other, there’s an option that mixes nylon, Venezia and Vitello leather, graced by another of Van Assche’s house signatures: a rich TDM Intenso patina that has been remixed to fit many of Berluti’s recent leather garments and accessories.
