Home Depot Now Carries a $4,000 USD Smart Door

Home Depot is now carrying smart doors or rather, a smart door, the M-PWR designed by Masonite, equipped with a Ring doorbell and Yale smart lock.

Installation of the door isn’t so simple though, even if you consider yourself handy, this is not a door you want to purchase and try to set up yourself. The $4,000 USD smart door taps directly into your home’s electricity, requiring a professional electrician for safe installation.

This is one of the major selling points of the door though, as one of the most common issues with smart locks and doorbells is the fact that they can run out of battery power, rendering themselves useless and sometimes creating accessibility issues. But what if the power goes out? Well, Masonite thought of that, which is why the door features a backup power source to keep running in emergency circumstances.

First revealed at CES 2022, the M-PWR features a fiberglass construction, meaning it’s designed to last. The door also comes in a variety of styles and color options, some of which can cost up to $7,000 USD. Additional technical aspects of the door include adjustable motion sensor lights, door activity sensor and app connectivity.

The only foreseeable issue with the door is the aspect of specific tech becoming obsolete, although, service operators from Ring and Yale are said to maintain the integrated systems. On the subject, Masonite’s SVP shared that “The door will last decades, but the tech won’t — so it’s designed to make upgrades over time,” although it’s unclear if that is a complete update of the door or an update to individual components.

Additional shortcomings include the need for separate apps to operate each of the systems on the door — meaning you’ll need three apps. However, the brands could potentially work this out collaboratively.
