MFA Boston to Explore Cy Twombly’s Affinity for Mythology and Antiquity

While it certainly may not be present upon first glance, Cy Twombly imbed each of his gesturally abstract paintings with a deep appreciation for history and mythology. A new exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA) will showcase this fascination in-depth across a series of his large-scale paintings that will be juxtaposed with ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian works from the museum’s collection.

Making Past Present: Cy Twombly will also mark the first time that objects from the American artist’s own personal collection of antiquities will be on display. From his totemic sculptures, often illegible drawings and paintings, to a meticulous focus on color and composition, visitors will get a unique look into Twombly’s affinity with the mythology, poetry, and archeology of antiquity and how he aimed to use the past to propel art into the future.

The exhibition will be on view at MFA Boston from January 14 to May 7.

For more on art, the British Museum is in talks to return several Parthenon Marbles back to Greece.
