Namacheko Conjures New Age Grunge for FW23

With Belgian brand Namacheko, there lives a commitment to subverting not only designs but themes that we’ve seen before. Alongside crafting remixed silhouettes, the brand stands tall in its power of reinvention. Just like previous collections, the brand’s latest for the Fall/Winter 2023 season walks stands in this same arena – offering new design perspectives on styles that have been long in existence.

Namacheko’s creative directive Dilan Lurr directs his gaze to the decades-old grunge aesthetic that was birthed in mid-80s Seattle. But since its genesis, the style has not only evolved but been transported to an international audience – twisting and turning with each new cultural addition. In the spirit of stylistic progression, Luur’s latest for Namacheko offers up a remixed grunge style. Aptly titled “Middle Age Grunge,” the collection draws its power from fusing heritage styles and contemporary silhouettes with punk characteristics.

Outerwear garments like overcoats and jackets appear in both single and double-breasted constructions with bejeweled embellishments, dual-fabric detailing, asymmetrical constructions and multi-button fastenings. But that’s just the start. Knitwear tops in warm coral and crisp gray were drawn together at the chest, which exposed blazers or long sleeve button-down shirts underneath. Notions of pseudo-refinement like this are paired with monochromatic acid-wash denim and shiny pointed-toe leather boots – perfectly revealing the hodge-podge sentiment of grunge styling.

Last summer for the brand’s “Tabula Rasa” SS23 show, a range of design details included twisted draping, elongated lines and reconstructed fabrications. The same is apparent here as both garment construction and styling combine these elements. Loosely pleated dresses and one-shoulder pieces merge with printed knit bodysuits while others showcase the harmony of mixed fabrics and unorthodox design pairings. Regardless of the garment style, the presentation of wit, quirkiness and contemporary class came out to play – adding to the dialogue of just how far grunge can be taken.
